Not Rolex, but a self-branded by a former Rolex AD in Singapore, around the late 40s or early 50s. A real "tropical" dial, along with some relevant ephemera.

I'm very new here but what you've said seems to ring true from what I've gathered. FWIW, I bought my watch to wear and use as a practical device, and I have every day for 30 years. Obviously there were other factors in my decision and while I treat it with an amount of respect (if that's the right word) I've never babied it.

It's fun to see watches that are less than pristine; watches that have done what they were intended to do.

The longer You stay around the more the double standards show up.The Heart of it is,That what You have is junk BUT once I buy it from You it’s “ NOS,Unpolished,Tropical” Goodness and the price magically raises 5K.

Sounds like you are picking a nit.

Because the value is determined by many items that influence condition.

If you have jacked hands or dial it affects condition which impacts price.

If you have a worn case or service insert it affects condition which impacts price.

You can have several technical deficiencies to a watch which causes a loss of value and then have that offset by cool patina and a cool grunge that compensate for some of that value loss. Add history or other factors (documented) and you can move price.

You can also have a watch with a great case, proper hands and dial, but no lovely pop, and that will suffer at selling time.

These are emotional AND financial decisions for most of us, and like any good hunt, knowing what you are doing goes a long way.

Yes and no. It also is affected by desirability and rareness of the reference. A clapped out and beaten Datejust will generally be viewed as that and not very valuable, a clapped out and beaten 6538 Sub has a whole different aura, perhaps some of it nostalgic and mythical as you allude to nevertheless there is a rarity and interest factor that is unquestionable. A clapped out and beaten 5508 or any probably any gilt Sub sits somewhere in between and so on depending on the reference.

In terms of value luck has played a huge role of course. In 1970 a Daytona cost approximately double a Datejust but today it will be worth 20 - 100 times more depending on various factors.

Certainly though there does seem to be some interesting internet editorial about “condition” from “leading collectors” and “experts” that affects price and fashionability!
