Datejust 41 vs Sub

Hi, new to this thread. Don't know much about watches, but have been doing my research for the past few months and met with some rolex dealers. Planning to get one for my fiance as a wedding/30th gift but torn between the:

Datejust 41 two tone with the champagne dial or the Sub two tone with the blue dial.

Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

First of all, welcome to TRF!
I would recommend the TT blue sub of the two you mentioned. The bluesy is such a beautiful watch. DJ is a great watch but the sub he can take diving and snorkeling. My wife bought me a TT Daytona for my wedding gift! He will b stoked. BTW, most on here don't like TT watches.

Both are great watches. I own the sub and my wife has the 2 tone datejust. I find the datejust can be worn daily and as well for formal occasions with the exception of black tie/black suit. The same goes for the sub two tone but you might have just a little harder time matching the watch with clothes due to its blue face (that's just me though)

One thing with the choice of the blue 2 tone sub is that you'll see less of them around on other people. I do often see steel subs as well as 2 tone datejusts on people.

Tough choice... my vote goes to the 2 tone sub blue face

The question is, can she pull off that big of a watch? I would consider a Datejust 31 as a much more sensible and elegant option:

For fiancée I'd go DJ41 and TT chocolate dial, bet she will love it.

A sub it is then. 41mm Datejust is an ugly, disproportionate fad. It makes me think Rolex is trying to compete with Michael Kors, when it should be the other way around 🤪

one more question so his dream watch is the day date president, but he wants the model from 1988 which my jeweler is in search for, however I don't know if I should put the money towards an older model if found, or just purchase a new sub?

As the only Rolex watch I would choose the TT Sub. If you know that he intends to buy a SS Sub in the future than probably a TT DJ41 would be better as a dressy piece.

As I read the first few posts, I thought some people were a bit presumptuous; glad you cleared that up.

I am indifferent on DJ41 and if the Sub I'd go with the black dial.

Have fun deciding, it won't be easy!!

Does he like gold in general? I love my two tone sub but the TT watches in general are a bit less desirable than the stainless steel models. Subs are generally more desirable than the DJ but I like the DJ as a dress watch. Although, either can be worn as such.

Between the two you presented I’d go with the Submariner.

Whatever you choose I’d recommend buying new from an authorized dealer for your first Rolex, especially if you are new to this hobby. There are unscrupulous people out there passing off fakes as the real thing and the peace of mind of buying new from an AD is worth the extra expense. I’d like to think I’m fairly knowledgeable at this point but honestly, I’ve looked at some very convincing fakes and I struggle to tell the difference. I bought my Rolex from an AD and my wife’s Rolex from an AD. My next will most likely also be from an AD.

Oh, and we love to see pictures of new incoming watches so be sure to come back and post pics when you get it!

My vote would be Sub TT, but a watch is a very personal thing - before making a multi $$$ mistake are you sure he definitely wants a TT?
Good luck anyway

so ultimately he would want an all gold, the day date, but with the wedding I'm on a budget. he's tried the TT and preferred it over the steel since he prefers gold jewelry.

That's as harsh a criticism of the new DJ41 as I have read. I'm not a big fan either, I love my classic 36mm, but I don't think the proportions are all that out of whack, more tapered bezel than the DJII.

My jeweler has also been looking for the day date president 1988 model with papers which is the one he wants the most, but not sure if I should put the money towards an older model or just purchase a new sub.

I'd say go for the Sub. They're both great watches, but the Sub can be worn every day and for anything. It's just the more versatile piece of the two.
