16600: 10 Year Retirement Anniversary

Can’t believe it’s been 10 years since the SEA-DWELLER 16600 was retired and the DEEP-SEA made its debut.

If I remember correctly 16600 was retired with a price of USD $6200 and DSSD debuted at USD $8000.

I’ve been lucky to have my Z series since 2011 after finding it NOS in a tiny AD, and although I love seeing the new releases every year, I’m happy having this one as my everyday watch.

The only Rolex that still hunts me (although not enough to pay today’s crazy prices) is the GMT-MASTER II 16710 as it’s a bit more comfortable and the GMT feature is awesome. To know I could’ve bought it BNIB from an AD when I purchased my first Rolex (a DJ) in 2007....

Love the 16600! It was the first Rolex bought myself in 1999. I believe MSRP was $3600.

@zeuloa
The 16600 is one of my favorite 5 digit References. As a few others have said, I think it's a modern classic. And the 16710 ain't too shabby either!

At one time, I had quite a few of them.......but I sold a couple.

The 16600 is probably my favorite all around reference

"There's an excessiveness to ambition as well"

Said about watch collecting by the occasionally attention-seeking but eloquent John Mayer, this quote embodies the Sea-Dweller for me.

Great thread but I think you’re a year off. From memory the DSSD was released in 2009.

It was my first professional. I bought it in 2005 for $4,200 and has gone with me on safari, swimming at the edge of the Victoria Falls, skiing in Sun Valley and by the Matterhorn in Zermatt, drinking in Dublin and Napa Valley, kayaking in the San Juan Islands among other memorable experiences. It’s very special to me.

As a dive watch nut, can't get enough of SDs.
