Rolex as Jewelry

How many of you buy a fine watch purely based on function? Purely based on Style? Purely based on accuracy?

If style isn’t high on your decision criteria please explain why you would spend 10 to 20 times more on a fine mechanical watch over a significantly less expensive quartz rubber watch.

Everyone of my quartz marvels are worth close to nothing. They all die after a year or two and require near yearly battery replacement. In short they are a pita. I much prefer a watch that retains value and can last a lifetime.

telling the time is a secondary reason i have watches as i always, always have a phone with me. Its not necessary in that role. It is necessary for many other reasons. Fashion, jewelry, enjoying the craftsmanship, the appeal of owning nice things etc.

My standards for accuracy are the same as Rolex

There is no real, indefensible, rational reason to buy any of my mechanical watches over cheaper alternatives, other than I wanted and was able to...

I have sub $200 Seiko Divers, built like brick shithouses, between 35 and 40 years old and are still going strong....

So, yes, jewelry, but that said, I don't really treat them as such....

Since about 1982, they've had a thing called solar power......
It's true that they don't retain value, I'd estimate I've lost 60% on some of my Casios, that's almost $80 !!!!

When I bought my first watch, way back in the 60s, accurate time keeping was a necessity. Style was not a consideration.
I chose Rolex because it was the only one (...perhaps still is) that combined lifelong utility, beauty and value.

As your obviously rhetorical question implies, nobody rational buys a Rolex, or any other mechanical watch, purely for function or accuracy.

I buy for all the reasons mentioned here. I consider my Rolex watches jewelry, they serve a function (time & date), and I enjoy owning something nice (craftsmanship, timeless design, the brand name). I also will not wear a Rolex if it is not accurate in keeping time --My DJ currently has this problem and I find it difficult to wear it since it is so inaccurate. It will be going to RSC soon so that I can enjoy wearing it again.

To me, a nice watch is one of the few items of jewelry a gentleman should wear and it should not be gaudy.

That said, I wear my black rubber Swiss Army watch as much as my DayDate.

If you want function, buy a G-Shock

We're all wearing Rolexes as jewelry, because they are pieces of art, I can look at my watch 20 times during traffic, and still don't know the time, I was just looking at how nice it looks, it's ok to admit it.

I try to blend function, style and quality for a reasonable price that retains a majority of its value. Sounds easy but it is not.

As I only have my phone on a few hours a day, my watch is an essential tool. The fact that I have a piece of beautiful wrist art on me is a bonus.

I truly appreciate the history, the craftsmanship and the aesthetics above all else.

I also think it’s amazing that these tiny little machines have no battery power, just a spring and a bunch of gears, that keep such accurate time.

I just buy what I like and what I can afford.

I have had this strange attraction to watches for a long time that just exploded over the last decade.

I pick different watches for different reasons and those reasons have changed over the years.

Any watch I buy has to have some practical application to my life, so esoteric complications are precluded, like say, the Yachtmaster II.

Also, I won't pay a nickle more than 4 digits for any watch.

It's a good thing that I have all the watches I'll ever need, especially at my age.

For me, it’s a blend of form and function. I like simple. Accuracy, durability, no reliance on batteries or constant recharging. If it meets my criteria AND it has a style that’s pleasing to me, I’m in.

Some of us “elders” are in the habit of checking a watch for the time. Not our cellphones. Cellphone is in my pocket, watch on my wrist. Quicker and easier to look at my wrist than pull out my phone.

I wear a watch for function. I wear a Rolex because I also want it to be jewelry.

Most of the time, I leave the house without a watch...don't even bother fixing the time LOL...so therefore, I can live without a watch.... It's a nice thing to have when I remember to put it on...

Now, I can't live without my phone :)

Lots of great comments here. I turn 60 this year and started carrying a pocket watch when I was 9 or 10. I have always loved watching the mechanics of any time piece.

IMO, about 10 years ago watches moved into 2 categories, a item of habit (we look at our wrist to see the time), or an item of style or fashion.

About 5 years ago watches also became a shortcut to the cell phone.

I believe, with the ceramic bezels, the Skydweller complications, the artful faces Rolex is pushing the style and fashion aspect. Rolex has also improved their lume where I can see the time all night long.

I have always loved and appreciated mechanical timepieces. Both clocks and watches. IMO, the style, the beauty of these watches is what captivates our interest given the technological pace we live in. We may find the smooth movement of the second hand interesting, but it is that beautiful bezel and watch face that stops us and brings the smile to our faces.

Just by definition if it has a function it is not jewellery which is just a pretty adornment. If you don't set the time on your watch then I'd say it was jewellery, I know some reality stars do this like Joey Essex.

maybe... but if you match it with clothes, take pictures of it, accessorize it with straps, and are concerned about how it looks, its jewellery

I'm all confused. My computer browser is british english and my phone is american english. I get the red underlined misspelling warnings when i use the wrong language on the wrong device

I'm on my computer and i wanted the red line to go away, earlier today in post #3 i was on my phone.
