Datejust 41 vs Explorer
To start, I currently have an Explorer 214270 mk.2, and I’m definitely planning on buying a new Seamaster Professional when they come out this summer. I’m probably going to buy the grey dial with the blue bezel on the bracelet.
While I love the Explorer, I’m starting to get the itch to buy a Datejust 41. I’m loving the black dial with smooth bezel and the jubilee bracelet. I know that the DJ41 is not really 41 mm, but I’m craving something a little bigger than the Explorer 39. Also my thinking is that the DJ41 on a jubilee would be a more formal option and would compliment the new Seamaster. Should I flip the Explorer for the Datejust 41? What’s everyone’s opinion on the Datejust 41 vs the Explorer? Does anyone own or has owned both? In a perfect world I’d love to buy the DJ41 and keep the Explorer, putting it on a rubberB as a beater, but financially it’s just not an option. Thanks!! |

Tough of a question for me as I love them both but I would keep the Explorer for its versatility.

DJ41. Easy.
Has every quality of the explorer, but also the date. And imho, more versatile.

I would flip it for the DJ41, but only the blue faced one with fluted bezel, sticks and jubilee.

Sounds like you want a change. Nothing wrong with changing watches if you can’t keep both.

Go try them all on and see if it works for you. Give it a little time to consider then decide. I would wait until you pick up the Omega as a new watch may scratch the itch without doing another trade.

Not a chance I’d trade an explorer for a smooth bezel dj41. Though it is a completely different look, maybe a fluted jubilee 41, but thats only if you really need a change. Otherwise, stay with your exp1.

Datejust 41 vs Explorer
I started with the DJ41 and will likely add the Explorer I next. If you can swing it I would keep the Exp!

I have a Mk1 Explorer and can not imagine flipping it, so versatile, reliable and a classic looking timepiece. That said, the DJ41 is a fantastic watch, and the smooth bezel/black dial is an awesome look. Not sure about the jubilee, a terrific bracelet but it’s a smidge more dressy, less versatile in my opinion.
Since you have the Mk2 Explorer I’d be more likely to let it go - I prefer the WG numerals on my version and have no problem with the shorter hands. As a dial option, black is beautiful, so is silver.

I prefer the Datejust 41, but not in the configuration you're looking to purchase. To that end, I'd just keep the Explorer.

I prefer the Explorer I (your new version) to any DJ41 except perhaps for the blue dial with the fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet. That version of the DJ is fantastic IMO, but it's all personal preference.
I see that you're getting a Seamaster, but for something similar to the Explorer but bigger I would go with the Sub (no date). I much prefer the Sub to the Explorer, but again that's just my personal preference.

The DJ is a very classy piece but personal peference for me right now are sport watches as they are more versitle. In many situations today the acceptance and purpose of an expensive sports/tool watch like a Rolex is deemed multipurpose. The Explorer looks perfect for both occasions while a DJ seems more like a classic dress watch. As for the date, I can really live without. It’s handy but I tend to remember the day and date pretty easily.
I would keep the Explorer and add the DJ later. I’m a huge Omega fan but I won’t pick that one over any of these two you are contemplating about. |

Thanks for the sound advice everyone! I’m not going to do anything till I buy the new Seamaster. We’ll see how I feel then.
I’d like to have at least 1 black dial watch. Should I buy the grey dial/blue bezel SMP and either keep my Explorer or flip for a black DJ41, or buy a black on black SMP and buy a blue dial DJ41? The blue DJ41 looks pretty awesome! |

I have a DJ 41 and have tried it close to a 216470 newest model.
They're pretty much identical in size and the diameter of the dial is the same. The dials on both are bigger than on my Blnr. The 41 is called 41 but is actually 39.5mm. Im only mentioning this as you said you were getting the 41 as "something bigger' then the Exp. Explorer will have slightly better legibility with its "Mercedes" hands. The Arabic lumed plots will help that too. The black dial on a 41 is 'sunburst' black..changes in the sunlight unlike the Exp black dial. Differences are subtle but they are both FANTASTIC models. |

For me, I mainly bought the DJ41 (126300)for the new 3235 movement. It has a 70 hour power reserve and is much more efficient than the older movement(s). I was also looking at an OP39 and a Milgauss, but the DJ41 won out. Couldn't be happier

If you like to change different watches through out your life then go for it, if you’re looking for one great watch to wear for the rest of your life then Explorer without a doubt
