Any concerns with Y-serial longevity?

I recently purchased a 114270 Y-serial (circa 2002) from a trusted seller here on TRF. Great watch and I love it, really good condition too, but doesn't appear to have been recently serviced so it's probably due for a trip to RSC.

I'm considering keeping this one for the long haul, but given the fact that it's roughly 15 years old already, should I have any concerns regarding its ability to last for years going forward (assuming it doesn't have any existing corrosion/damage issues and that I care for it properly)?

You should have no concerns imho. Get it pressure tested to ensure it’s water tight before swimming with it.

There are two schools of thought on servicing.
1) service at regular intervals (every 5-10years)
2) service only when something is wrong (timekeeping is off, etc)

I tend to fall into the second camp myself. Enjoy the watch and don’t worry about it. It will last your lifetime at least :-)

I have a few from the 1920s ad still ticking strong and expect will be still ticking when my own ticker stops. The cal 3135 is a very very robust movement and with just regular service its good for 60 plus years.

I had the same question when I bought my K (circa 2001) sub and I saw there is nothing to be concerned about. These are modern pieces and any damaged part will likely be easily replaced even years from now given how many of these movements are out there.

After a year-and-a-half with my sub I've taken it all around the world - diving, camping in the desert, surfing etc. with zero issues, and it's still keeping time at around +1.5 sec/day. This already 17 year old watch will certainly outlast me.

I have Y-Serial GMT-II (purchased new in about 2003) and have never had it serviced. Still runs perfectly. I fall into the camp of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I have a Rolex SD 1665 purchased new 1984. I bought it a couple years ago and it had never been serviced. It was beat to death and looked like crap. A service with a new crystal, bracelet, a different bezel insert, and a movement service has it in tip top shape........ready to run for another 34 years. These watches are made to run for years and years and years. Your Y serial is just a baby. Heck.......it’s barely broken-in.

I understand that this is a q&a forum, but wouldn't it be better to ask the question before you pulled the trigger?

clockworks don't go bad like a loaf of bread, they will last for many, many decades.

Change the gaskets periodically, oil it if needed, and it will certainly out live you.

I think you could service your beatiful watch every 5/10 years... at least ;)

It's true that many people don't service their watches unless something happened, but I suggest you to not forget that it's a mechanical watch and sometimes it needs a service just like your car :)

Keep it regularly serviced every 5-7 years, and there will be 0 concerns of that watch outlasting you.

My F series SD from 2005 just stopped 2 weeks ago after 13 years but my YM, Turnogragh and Kermit also from 2005 are still going strong. I opted not to replace the crystal and bezel insert because to my eye there were no issues and would rather have original. I can’t wait to see it.
