Rolex Explorer 114270 or DateJust 1601?

Explorer 114270 or Datejust 1601

I’ve had GMT2 C and a Sub C, both 40mm, and a 44mm Panerai. Now, I would like to have my 3rd Rolex which I’m hunting for a 36mm. (Used)

Both are classic model. I’ve seen quite a number of DJ in the wild, but not the Explorer.
IMO, Explorer can be a dress and casual watch with both Steel & Leather Strap. But the DJ can only be worn with the leather straps (don’t prefer the original Jubilee), but I like the vintage look of a DJ.

The Explorer’s price is double of the DJ.

Which one would be your choice?

Explorer is cooler but 1601 have more dial options.

Having had a 14270 myself the straps while you can change them easily. Keep in mind at 36mm size when you use straps it looks much smaller than 36mm.

Also, you need curved bars because the case length is 39mm or so.

I think the Explorer is more collectible so will probably retain value better in the long run. Otherwise, the Datejust is actually a superior watch imo since you get the date and have more dial/bracelet/bezel options. However if you go with a datejust, I wouldn't go with a 1601. They are likely to have a very stretched bracelet and the lack of quickset date will be very annoying, especially if not worn daily. I'd go for a 16220, 16234, 16233 and not a 1601.

I've owned the 1601. A great and classic sample. I subsequently moved that one along for the newer 39mm Explorer 1 but I would have no hesitation moving the DJ for the 36mm Explorer 1.

Both iconic and under the radar watches, but I found I got bored of the DJ and the Explorer is more suitable for all occasion when compared to the DJ.
