Hi, I'm new to RolexForums and to Rolex in general. I'm planning to buy a 18238 or 118238. Obviously the price points are very different. I'd like to understand what the main differences are. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Dont know for sure, but I think one is unisex while the other is a mans watch; at least the CD version. Not sure about the MDP. I'm sure the experts will chime in shortly.

They're the same watch except one (118238) is newer than the other..

Some cosmetic differences.. solid bracelet, slightly thicker lugs

I've read there is a dramatic weight difference. Can someone confirm? Does anyone know the ballpark weights of each?

The new model's bracelet too is heavier.
You can feel the difference immediately if you held them side by side.
And definitely a newer and more shiny clasp.

The newer model feels much heavier hands down. My brother-in-law recently got an 118238 and after seeing it / holding it, I could not go back to the older version...

The heavier President bracelet was introduced with the P series and the new improved clasp with the F series.

118238 was introduced in 2000, basic changes are: heavier bracelet (solid links), and domed crystal (not flat as in 18238)

If you pay an appropriate amount for the extra gold, other than having more gold, why is it worth the extra $'s?

I say "appropriate amount" because, often, an extra $1,000 of gold will cost double or triple when Rolex builds into a watch.

If you want extra gold, buy the heavier one. Otherwise, you've got the same watch.

On the president bracelet the biggest diff is the shiny bigger lugs and deff the new clasp introduced in the F series.

It really comes down to how much you want to pay. Looks wise its basically the same. I dont think 8500 will buy u a mint 18238, I think a realistic price is about 10-11 for a 18238 and about 12-14 for a 118238

I have an 18238. It confuses me as to why anyone would want a heaver watch. In fact if you sleep with a watch on, something heavy will only end up on your nightstand. I love my 18238. I am also a perfectionist and can study things for years before making a decision. You will get the most value with an 18238 especially if it has recently been serviced. Save your self the extra money and the extra weight and buy a serviced 18238. You will love it.

Had a 118238 and I hated the blinged out lugs!

I have my late fathers 18078 he bought it new in 1980 wore 24/7 for 30 years! I wear it often.
. I totally agree 18038 and 18238 are great nothing wrong with them I like them more than the new ref. Weight does not mean better The new clasp is fatter doesn't nice inside the bracelet like the old one. If you wear the DD the proper way and keep it clean will look great for a very long time. My dad's is a prime example and never polished in it's life ! I love it.
