Help me pick the ultimate classic dress watch

Dear TRF,

What I have in my collection right now are the following:
1) Datejust 41: champagne dial with diamond marker(as pictured)
2) Submariner 116610LV "Hulk"

I'm planning to find and purchase the ultimate classic/dress watch piece, I am considering of flipping or adding to my DJ41 on this grail hunt.

Which combo would you choose (picture for reference):
1) flip DJ41 and get Day-Date 40 YG w/ silver dial
2) keep DJ41 and add a AP Royal Oak 41mm 15400ST
3) keep DJ41 and add a Breguet Classique 7147

Thanks guy for your opinions.

I like the AP out of that group. I'm not a big fan of YG in general

Just my opinion of course, but I need a DD in my life before I die. I believe that's what Federer had on in his interview with McEnroe yesterday - I just caught a quick second of it on the tv this am - but it was stunning. To me it is the classic dress watch with a bit of a sporting edge. For pure dress watches I also love A Lange Sohne but you didn't ask about those.. haha.

+1 for the Breguet here. It's the epitomy of class. I'm not a YG fan though.

I’d flip the DJ and go for the Breguet in a heartbeat!

In case you have not seen it, here is a nice article on the 7247:

Out of the choices, DD40. If your looking for a dressy watch on leather strap then I would consider Patek 5227.

The perfect dress watch in my opinion would be 34mm-36mm and wouldn't have screws in the bezel.

I’d keep the DJ. That to me is already a classic dress watch

+1 on keeping the DateJust. That is a classic and elegant dress watch. The DayDate is lovely, but I prefer the layout of the DJ dial, it's sharper with the Rolex crown in the right place at 12, rather that pushed down.

I like them all, but for a 'classic dress watch'...this is the one

I was reading Le pare goriot recently, a Balzac novel from 1835, and there was a reference to breguet watches. It took a little for me to really appreciate that a book from 1835 references them, and how well established they were even back then, yet still in production. They were established about a century before AP, and almost a century and a half prior to Rolex.

Classy involves class, elegance... YG involves “hey look at me” - not elegant - old school or oligarch / rapper / middle east rococo baroque heavy style
Breguet is the only choice there for class elegance and distinction

Help me pick the ultimate classic dress watch

Breguet 100%. WG DD would be ok. I guess context matters. I work in Gordon Gekko world and I still would never rock a YG DD at work. On the weekend absolutely. But only the Breguet is a true dress watch of those. If you want Rolex go Cellini.

If you are after classic dress watch, then in my view it should have a leather band only.

Have you also considered a PP Calatrava ?

If of just those 4 mentioned then the Breguet hands down wins based on your written criteria of ultimate classic dress watch.

If you want a sporty, yet dressy watch then the 15400 or DD would both work equally well depending on the type of attire you will be matching it to.

Breguet is the only dress watch of these 3. Others are great sport watches but do not qualify as dress watches imo. As others have said PP, JLC, ALS have some great choices.
