Op seems dense. Yes walk in and act dissapointed one of the hottest watches is not available for purchase - especially one that people are on 3 year waitlists for by the same AD

Shreve is a fine company with fine people and I'm not a big fan of any AD but those guys are solid so no need to talk crap about them.

I've visited them a few times and recently had a sub engraved by the guy who shares the upstairs space. They've always been very friendly and accommodating to me. It wouldn't bother me if they have a DaytonaC for display purposes only. I think it would be nice to see one in person and try it on. I understand the game but I choose not to play it. I'm not mad at AD's, Rolex, or the Greys. It is what it is. If/when I'm able to buy what I want at retail I'll do that, otherwise I'm pretty happy with what I've got. There are plenty of other nice watches to choose from.
Like this one I tried on at Shreve SF last week: |

Not such a bad thing to have display watches. At least you can try them on and see if you really like a piece first before wasting your time with other ADs

On a business trip I went in to an AD and was allowed to try on a white Daytona they had in the safe. They claimed it was sold which I doubt. It was just waiting for a big spender or someone they could bundle. I wanted black anyways. I tried the white to see how it wore because I had never had any Daytona on my wrist. I handed it back, thanked the salesperson and turned to leave. Then they said if I bought a Day Date, I could pick up a Daytona the next day. I just kept walking. I’m sure they didn’t care and neither did I. I waited 18 months from when I asked to be on the list but my local AD sourced me the Daytona a few weeks ago.

This has come up before, but I still feel it's not a bad practice to have 'display only' models. Kind of nice to see and try something in the flesh, and it's not uncommon practice in other countries and businesses.

Agreed!
Lol
You know, I actually wish they all had display pieces so you can at least try the damn thing on, before making a deposit for an unknown period. To this day I haven't tried on the black one, and the only reason I tried the white, is because of people that I met who let me try on their watch.

Can’t trash the place based on that. 116500s aren’t just for sale to the passerby. Sorry

Shreve is great. They've been in San Francisco for more than 100 years. Although it's not where their store is located any more, the city's main watchmaker office building is the Shreve Building, named after them (where the SF RSC was/is, among other prominent watchmakers). The staff there are pleasant and knowledgeable.
*edit* Heh, if they sold it to someone else, then I'll take back my thoughts that it was already spoken for. Still a great store with friendly staff, and I'd never hesitate to buy from them. |

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's curious how it wasn't available for OP but somehow you purchased. Whats the story here?

I only have positive things to say about Shreve in SF. Another member recently (few months ago) posted a very memorable story of having a great buying experience there for him and his partner.
Can't say I have heard of this form of dangling the carrot. One thing to suggest a Daytona can magically appear with the right PM purchase -- having it out on display is a whole new level of baiting. That being said, I wouldn't say that warrants negative remarks about them. Unfortunately, I'm sure most of us know you can't simply walk into a store and buy a SS Daytona straight out of a display case. There are some things that are "too good to be true" in today's watch market. |

Not the experience I've had with them
Shreve has always been pretty decent with me in regards to buying Rolex's. They haven't had much on display lately, like all other AD's, but they have gotten me 2 hard to find models within a few months or so. As far as I'm concerned they've been MUCH better than many of the other Bay Area AD's about all aspects of watches. Honest, and professional. That's all you can ask.
