On one hand, I’ve never cared what anyone else thinks of my decisions, parenting or otherwise.

OTOH, the goal of parenting is to raise kids that are prepared to become successful as adults. I’m not sure handing them expensive things throughout their childhood is the best way to approach that goal.

When someone hands you everything you want, why develop the motivation to succeed on your own?

Reading the majority of posts thus far explains the “snowflake” phenomena in society very clearly.

It seems that parents are in a competition through their children.

Flame away, but that’s my opinion .........................

He makes his own money for the things he wants. I supplement with the things he needs.

I can see a future with a spoiled, entitled adult that will suffer when they might not be able to maintain their lifestyle.
Love, great memories, discipline, and respect are the cornerstones of growing up; not Gucci, Hermès, and Prata. Those things are for those that work for them.

No kids! Dad and mom were divided on this. Mom wanted to spoil me with fancy things and dad was more practical. In the end, I think dad had a better philosophy. He instilled that if I work hard and save for something I want I will appreciate it more and I believe this.

I agree. Unfortunately, it’s natural decay.....entropy. As long as “I just don’t want my kids to have to struggle like I did” is the mantra, our kids will be lesser people. That being said, as a general rule, I’ll raise my kid and let you raise yours.

I’ve got two boys, they’re young, 5 & 2.

Regardless of their age now, I won’t be buying them anything expensive at any juncture for a very long time, until it’s earned!

I’ll provide them with a happy childhood, lots of memories, and basic things like food/shelter/clothes/etc... My older son scored the first goal for his soccer team, I took him to an ice cream parlor and let him buy a quart to take home and portion out over the next several days. But expensive things, NFW! It’ll be earned, by them! When my wife & I die, theyll be left with the keys to our castle, but by then, if all goes as planned, it’ll simply be a bonus and they’ll hopefully be grown and successful on their own merit!

If they accomplish something big at 18 like a scholarship, maybe I’ll get them like a 3 series, graduate on the Dean’s list, maybe a nice watch, start going on job interviews, a nice suit, but I’ve never been handed a thing and it’s kept me hungry!
