Rolex crown.. HELP

About to purchase a date just 36mm gold and steel, mother of pearl dial. Lovely watch.. the Crown of the winder has a scratch/rub on it. I questioned how this has rubbed/scratched if it’s suppossd to be gold. It’s rubbed to the point that steel can be seen through the gold. The watch seller who I do trust and they do know about watches and have connections across the world, they said that the crown of the winder isn’t gold and that’s just how Rolex make them. Everything gold but the winder crown. Any advice before I shell out £5500. It’s post 1980 because it has sapphire crystal glass

It has only been within the past decade or so that Rolex has used a solid gold "monobloc" for their crowns. Even then a stainless thread coil is used.

If the watch is from the 80's it will have a steel core with a solid gold cap pressed around that core.

.

Thanks for the reply 👍👍. Iv seen a picture on this forum I think where the gold casing over the crown has cracked. But this watch in question isn’t like that it’s like the gold has rubbed off like you can see the steel through is like if you imagine a gold plated piece of jewellery and the gold has rubbed off

Thats got to be an old crown to wear the gold cap down like that. If it was caused by a blow I would think the crown would have broke off since there is no crown guards.

Can you ask for blurrier pictures? Those aren't quite blurry enough for me.

Photo appears to be a gold cap which is correct. The crown is stainless steel as Tools already mentioned.
