Anyone else read this on ablogtowatch?

I totally agree and it's the main reason I am put off from buying Rolex (Not up to PP level yet) I'll pay list for new but not more, less than list for used except for models which are no longer produced or vintage which is why I have almost given up hope for a Hulk. |

I don’t view “scalpers” as the problem. Not producing enough watches in the higher-demand models is the fundamental issue. A secondary problem would be ADs reserving high demand models for people who also agree to buy low demand models as part of a bundle.

I totally agree with this concept of refusing to pay over retail for popular watches but unfortunately it’s easier said than done.

As long as some are willing to pay, it will continue.

PP, AP and even Omega have similar problems in delivering the most wanted models. Best stop buying popular watches all together

When i first got into watches/Rolex, i use to think that the hard part was saving enough money to buy one. Who would have thought that this is actually the easiest part.

I read the first page and saw Ariel Adams as the author, tab immediately closed. Kudos at least his syntax has improved. Can’t stand the nonsense and “theories” he spews.

Not up to PP level? First they absolutely blow PP out of the water with regard to revenue and second two very different watch companies. Rolex never has and hopefully never will strive to be PP.

Low production is their game and scalpers have only made the problem worse

I will never pay over retail for a “hot” of the moment watch. I will either buy something else or live without a new watch for a while. Not a huge deal to me.

I don‘t see scalpers or speculators as problem. They‘re more a reaction.
The real problem are the customers, specifically the mindset they have about watches and value. If the customers would care less about value and see a watch the same as a car or a vacation and use it as supposed instead of just taking pictures we wouldn‘t have these problems. Really funny is how most people moaning about not getting their precious Rolex or Patek... then why you don‘t buy another watch brand? Ah sure, because it simply doesn‘t hold value and doesn’t have the possible recognition of specific people you want and need. |

I’m sensing you and I buy watches for somewhat different reasons. I don’t care if my watches retain their value, as I buy them with the intent of keeping them forever. I’d rather be able to buy the watches that I want - e.g. the BLRO - and have it depreciate than not be able to buy it and have it go up in value on the grey or used markets ... Not up to PP level meant I'm not at that buying level where I can buy multiple £20k+ watches. |

I think this says it all.

I dislike scalpers/grey market dealers. I have bought watches from them, but only past models that are not made anymore, never new watches. I rather wait and pay retail.

Here's a gray area (no pun intended): the SD43 has already gone from a Mk1 to a Mk2 dial. Presumably, anything you would have to wait to obtain from an AD at this point will be a Mk2; equally presumably, the only way to obtain a Mk1 is to go with a gray who has one, which will almost certainly be at a premium, especially if unworn. Generally, paying the market price for out-of-production models isn't seen as helping "scalpers"; it's just the way you do business. However, the unworn Mk1 stock at grays got there because of the scalpers. So, if you really want a Mk1 SD43, and you decide to pay the gray premium to get one, are you simply engaging the aftermarket for an out-of-production iteration of a specific model, or are you supporting a "corrupt" system of scalping? Or both?

Daytona’s and blro are flying off the shelf’s at 20k
I track the sales, if you track sales you would be pursuaded to buy at 20k But I still do not |

Parallel market over which Rolex has no control will at some point create issues. It’s never good for any business to let go off their channel.
