Has your Rolex ever been upstaged

when you are out and about.

Was in a mall today , pretty affluent area

I always glance peoples wrists walking past - I know it’s a sickness :)

Pass a guy wearing an ss GMT ceramic ,I smile

Walk further down , I see a father in business attire , followed by what I presume was is his son late teens / early 20s , casual jeans/shirt

Something shiny catches my eye on the sons wrist , I take another look - bewm rose gold AP , gold bracelet the works , damn !

Now maybe it wasn’t the real deal , but geez it looked it the way it glimmered under the lights ;)

Wearing my OP out the other day for a drink; the older guy next to me at the bar had a yellow gold Sub. I guess the OP was outclassed. We had a nice discussion about the Sub.

That’s pretty cool that you could strike up a conversation

In my situation it would have been weird for me to go up to the kid half my age and say “ wow cool AP”

No, I just ordered my favourite Roast Pork Bahn Mi roll ( with pate and crackling ) and soon felt a lot better

Saw a guy a couple weeks ago walk past me with a 5712. My Sub was upstaged instantly but I didn’t care because Pateks aren’t my thing.

Only every month or so. I am the only modern Rolex collector among my friends, who only buy and own the rarest vintage Rolexes. In their eyes, my modern pieces are laughable and I am a fool for collecting them.

Then there's the family get together, where my in-laws are Patek and AP collectors. Sometimes they condescendingly nod at my Hulk or Batman, while they're wearing AP ROC, PP Perpertual Calendar and PP Nautilus Chrono.

I might as well be wearing a Seiko. So I started doing it. A month ago I wore my SKX and immediately felt a lot better. :p

When this happens I just pull out my johnson and settle it on the spot. Either that or we duel.

Don’t you have a couple lambs if I recall? You’re the one upstaging cats most of the day

My five Rolexes are upstaged by my two PPs, which are in turn upstaged by an old FP Journe.

Doesn't mean I don't love the Rolexes, and I also love my Seiko diver.

Sat next to a guy on a plane wearing a 2 tone YMII. Had a nice conversation, however I was not wearing a watch at the time. 10 mins later I notice the air stewardess was wearing a Platona!!!! Could not believe it - not sure the kind of salary cabin crew staff are on (excuse my ignorance maybe they are extremely well paid nowadays) but I did wonder if she was maybe married to a pilot! She was clearly babying it when reaching into the trolleys etc too and boy did it stand out!

It happens to me all the time but I just put a paper bag over my head to avoid the shame.

Yeah ... been there.

Was complimented on my SD by an old work colleague I'd not seen in years last time home on leave ... about 6 seconds before he rolled his sleeve up to show me his pristine gold Sub.

I'm sure it made his day.

As long as it didn’t ruin yours , did he take it off and make you feel the weight , or else it doesn’t count! Haha!

It is a good lesson to be humble as there is always something bigger, nicer or faster out there.

I kind of get it what you are saying but i dont realy care if someone is wearing a more expensive watch. No issues wearing one of my less expensive watches like the speedy or black bay and meeting someone with a Patek.

However, i recently received my DD 228235 everose. I havent wore it yet but can imagine i wil feel a bit outclassed when sitting at a table with someone wearing a Reverso for example. Thats like waiting for a stop sign in your brand new Ferrari and a Jaguar E-type pulls up next to you.

No

I enjoy owning and wearing watches. I don't care about faux contests and hurt feelings.

My example of this was when I was in Selfridges in their safe department looking at a gold Nautilus 5712 with a dealer when another client of his in the next booth was wearing a unicorn platinum Nautilus 5711, and I said I had never even seen one, and the dealer brought the guy over and he took it off and let me put it on. I felt a bit like a One Directioner backstage at their concert, the owner was very cool and pretty smug too.

I’ve never felt upstaged. I’m not saying I haven’t been though

I know there are people with more money, nicer homes, better cars and watches etc etc etc. I feel at home wearing my Submariner in any situation and don’t think of it as being upstaged I guess.

Never.

A wise old man with a Rolex Daytona 5711 minute repeater chronograph selling watches on the street once told me:

If you never look for watches, you’ll never get upstaged.

Spot on, Brian.

My collection is big by some standards, small by others, alright by me.

I have a very small, modest collection. But I have never really felt upstaged. In fact I enjoy seeing others wearing good mechanical time pieces in a world where smart watches are becoming the norm.

When I say “upstaged” I didn’t mean that something happened , or that you’re not content with what you have , but we are watch enthusiast and notice these things , that’s all :)

Even when I went 15 years wearing a late 1990s Movado Vizio and some $300 early 2000s 2-tone plated Cartier rectangle cased quartz watch , I never cared. I felt 100% content with what I owned. Plus I will never sell that Cartier because it was worn during my proposal to the Mrs, wedding, trips to Europe and birth of our first child. I also wore it attending many sports games with my father.

Heck, I fell slightly different wearing a Rolex. More like I don't want to upstage people in my presence at informal settings / function / work. So I sold my more shiny models (DateJust, Yacht-Master and DJ TOG) for more subdued ones (e.g. 1990s Tudor Chrono, GMT2-C Black / Blue with a brushed bracelet, 5 digit Sub & GMT models). I also throw on a dark gray Apple 2 watch.

Bottom line is I try to dress appropriately for the occasion and don't pay attention to other people. However, it's always cool seeing someone wear a vintage model in the wild.

I've seen others wear more expensive/exclusive watches while I've been out and about (FPJ, PP, Laurant Ferrier). But I don't think I'd classify my attitude as feeling "outclassed". If anything, I'm more excited that I get to see these watches out in the wild.
