Shipping Question

I just purchased a new SS Submariner Date for my son. Got a good deal out of state from an AD who shipped it FedEx to me. I would like to ship it to him on an priority/overnight basis and insure it for the list price of the watch. UPS wants almost $300 but will insure it. I'm being told by FedEx they'll priority/overnight it, but can't insure it for more than $1000, which makes no sense to me. It's currently in the FedEx box it was shipped in. If I unbox it and let FedEx repackage and re-box it, would they then insure it for $8500? What's the best and safest way to do this? I'm not willing to ship it insured for $1000. I'd prefer to use FedEx if possible. Appreciate the input. Want to ship tomorrow, to get to my son tomorrow, so quick responses would be very much appreciated. Thanks!!

FedEx will have limitations on the amount that is insurable. You will need to insure through Parcel Pro. However, you need to have a Parcel Pro account first, which will take a bit of time.

Check with your home insurance policy to see if they you have coverage while the watch is in transit.

My home insurer is checking to see if the watch can be insured during transit. If so, that would cost $180/year or $1.00 for two days! Hope we can do that.

There is plenty of threads on how to do this the right way if you do a search here. Trust me you dont want to get this wrong because the sticky finger syndrome with shippers is rampant. Most have limits on what they will pay even if you pay to have it insured for higher.

Thanks for your suggestion. My homeowners insurer will cover the watch for full value while in overnight transit. I didn't know they would do it, but they agreed. They add it to my jewelry rider. So, for two day coverage, it will run me around $1.00. Really.

I really do trust FedEx or UPS. Their priority/overnight service is reliable. When I received the package from FedEx, it appeared untouched.

I would recommend simply having the AD ship the watch direct to your son.

Second recommendation would be to ship usps registered insured mail. It’s slow, but safe

What if you get a Jeweler's Mutual insurance policy on it? Would that cover the shipment? It would be a nice touch to give him the first year of a JM insurance policy, with the watch.

I’d want something in writing before I trusted my homeowners policy since this is such a strange thing. Also, I hate the idea of making a claim against my homeowners policy, even if it’s just a jewelry rider.

If I was in your shoes I’d go to my local Rolex AD and pay them to ship it using their ParcelPro account.

Thats good that you trust them but it doesnt remove the fact that stuff gets stolen/misplaced daily. When you try to make a claim is when it gets interesting and usually not in a good way. If you send a watch back to Rolex they used to only receive it USPS Registered mail. I understand lately that may be opening up but I havent done it yet. Also when a Jeweler sends you a high dollar item they dont insure it with the shipper. They run it through a different entity like Parcel Pro. This way they dont unzip the fly so to speak with a Large dollar amount on the shipping label alerting every unsavory character that theres something of value in the package. So if you insure through UPS or FedX, you dont have the same anonymity. I didnt know that about home owners but I would also get it in writing.

Don't have either FedEx or UPS package it - do it yourself. Usually not a bright idea to have an employee realize you're shipping a 10k watch. Watches have "disappeared" in the past

Sorry, and I'm sure there's a plausible reason, but how come you didn't just have the AD ship it directly to your son?

Put it in a backpack, hop a Friday morning flight, give it to him over a nice lunch, fly home later Friday afternoon.

About the same as UPS without the worry + you get a nice memory to boot.

I have used USPS registered mail for years without a problem. They insist that you insure for full value. The package is sealed at the post office, and then signed for at every stop along the way, and it is kept under lock and key. The addressee has to sign for it with proper ID. Cost of all of the above, usually less that $50.00.

USPS registered mail or bring it with you.

UPS, FedEx--these guys are picky with what they will cover and up to how much.

ParcelPro--best way out side of USPS registered mail, but may cost a bit more.
