1976 rolex

Hello Everyone. I hope that you all had a nice Christmas. I am pretty new on the forum, but have learned a lot from everyone's posts.

I have been thinking about keeping my eyes out for rolex made in my birth year, 1976. Kind of neat to have a watch as old as you. Get to grow old together. I was wondering if some of you experts can answer a few questions:

1) I was thinking about a 1976 sub. I know that the red sub was out then, but were there non red subs produced that year as well? I am thinking about a subdate, but don't want to pay a fortune for the red sub (though I would take one at a good price in a heart beat)

2) As I am researching this 1976 rolexes, what are some good books or other resources to look at to learn more about what was out there during that time? Also where do I look to get a sense about a good price would be?

3) Other than TRF's Sale section and Ebay, where do you suggest I look for a 1976 sub?

Thanks for all of your help.

It's always a bit of a minefield to say when a certain model or change took place with vintage Rolex as records of the time are spotty at best.

1976 would put you in the beginning of the 4 mil. range of serial numbers. There are those that say the 1680 RED was made longer than that for certain markets, but most collectors shy away from anything much over the 3.8 to 3.9 mil. area---though one collector indicates being an original owner at 4. mil.

The 1680 white was certainly out by then and is the exact same watch sans a bit of red paint.

One of the best places to research vintage and gauge asking prices is here,

The 1680 (red or white ) is my favorite vintage diver.

Good luck.

You can pick up a nice 5513 no date sub as well

From what I`ve read of the history of the Submariner, the "red" finished production sometime in 1975 so you should be looking for the more affordable white one.

Good luck!

Snap, been looking for a while with no luck and I read somewhere there was a lull in production in 76 due to economy but maybe someone more knowledgable can confirm or deny.
