Is the 50th Anniversary Kermit a good buy?

I found a full set, 2003 early Y serial Kermit in mint condition, some of the plastic is still on in. Everything checks out as a true anniversary piece. Wondering if it's a good "investment" buy to stash in a safe. Would run 20K. But what could it be worth in 2053? Could it be a Daytona type of auction piece? Thoughts?

Hard to say at $20k. Only thing to know for sure is that someone has made money on this one so far. Buying at $12-13k would make me feel better.

Naahhh, Don't care if it's $30K, $50k in five years. I buy the watches I like for the enjoyment of wearing it, not investing or putting it in a safe, to hope and pray.
If you're an investor, buy the Rolex catalog and pray. Have fun. I'm going to buy and beat the crap out of my watches and hopefully enjoy and create so many great memories between now and 2053.

There are real investments, much better and solid for retirement. And if my children really care about dad, I could leave them a dry potato and they'd love and cherish it. I have some nice things they already want....
Hard cash would serve them better than a watch they'd have to find a buyer for and hope to not get ripped off in 50 years.
But everyone is an investor nowadays so go for it, just not my thing. He wanted opinions so...

This is hard for me to wrap my head around considering I bought a D serial in 2006 for $4,575.

I know the true 2003 is worth more but $20k? No thanks.

The ONLY stainless Submariner I’d even consider shelling out that kind of $$ for would be a red line 1680 - period.

Buying a watch as an investment is a bad idea for 99% of watches. Period. A few will appreciate. Most wont. Even those that appear to be appreciating now may depreciate in the future. Buy it. Wear it. Enjoy it.

At $20k, if you like it, I would buy it.

I owned a 16610LV and never really connected with it, the green proved to be too much for me.

If you think at 20k it's good deal , then please buy it . And as to future investment value ,it's a bit like buying a lottery ticket & then asking a group of strangers if they think you have the winning numbers .

Wow! Price of these Kermit is getting crazy too. I bought 3 brand new Kermits from AD for around $5K each back then...

Although I do like the watch, I would not buy the 20K one to wear and enjoy. I can grab one of the later releases for almost half (12ish I believe) for that. Was just thinking that it may be an "investment" piece. But many of you made good points. I appreciate it. So will let it go :) Thanks!

But as fleabag said, will be interesting to see this post in 5 years lol

Nicely put CPR. Honestly, I tire of these, "is this a good investment?" questions. It's a watch, not a piece of art. It's 16610LV, which Rolex made for seven years. It's not Paul Newman's Paul Newman--which also may depreciate from the $17mill paid out. Who knows!!

Great price for a true Y - and yes a GREAT investment at that price.

I've seen F's with stickers for over $40K right now.

$20k. Hell yea. Unworn pieces goes for $35-40k in auctions. It will worth millions in 2053 if the planet still exists. Then again, the next generation of people might have no idea what a wrist watch is. Buy and wear it if you can afford it.

Know who makes money investing in antiques?
Antique dealers and antique auctioneers.
Go watch some episodes of Pawn Stars. Notice these recurring messages to 'investors' trying to resell to a dealer:
-I can't pay you that, because I buy at wholesale and mark it up.
-you're not a dealer, you're not going to find someone who will pay you the price they will give me
-Jeez, this is old and cool but they just aren't valuable to anyone
-there used to be a huge market for this at the turn of the century. used to be. I'll give you a dollar cause i like it.
-wow, that's cool. too bad everyone who wanted one of these already died a while ago.
-sure there's a collector for this, but it's going to take me a long time to find that collector and i'm an expert dealer

$20 is too much. Does it have the "flat 4" bezel?

An investment in a good watch yes. An investment investment no, not a chance

The wording in this post could be adjusted to: is it a good investment to buy xyz item for top dollar at the peak of market height?

Sure the market could always go higher, but I think the number of buyers for $20k+ SS watches is more likely to contract than expand. That’s just me though, I’m a pessimist

Buy $20k worth of a blue chip stock and stick the stock certificates in your safe. They are far more likely to be worth more in 2053 than the watch.
