Dude, you're on a ship packed with mostly older folks. Wear your Rolex w/o any issues. There is a big difference between going to a port city and hiking across South America.

Mexico, like many Latin countries has salaries that are significantly below first world norms.

$10,000 is a very nice annual income in Mexico for a family. That’s a lot of temptation for anyone. And a thief has no compunction stealing that what for him is an awful lot of $$$$$$$.

The safest places in Mexico are in the tourist resorts that are all inclusive, Mérida and certain other places in the Yucatán.

Everywhere else, why risk it?

Thanks guys. I've decided to go with option 2. Wear the Rolex on the cruise and then leave it in the safe and wear my Timex when for the 3 stops.

You'll be fine doing that. Personally I would wear it also during the city trips.
I have stayed and worked in this beautiful country both on east and west coast and totally loved it wearing my Submariner.
Still own it, nothing happened and I don't even have insurance

I have no idea what the safety situation is aboard cruise ships or at ports of call in Mexico, but if this is already a question in your mind, it's going to be on your mind during your trip.

Just leave the Rolex at home and enjoy your trip.

You're on a cruise, why do you need a watch? Don't want to miss the midnight buffet?

I just shared this thread with my wife.
We have travelled extensively all over the world between us.

We are of the opinion.
Take the middle road.
Option 2 would be most prudent if you must take the Rolex with you.

I would leave it behind, better safe than sorry. That being said, I would also find a new insurer that covers it anywhere in the world...

If you are concerned about the watch, but taking yourself anyway that's kind of backwards. I won't go anywhere if its not safe for my watch because its not safe for me with or without a watch

From what I have been reading recently about cruise safety and statistics you would be safer wearing the SUB, out of the two of you it should survive the drop off the railings into the sea! :O

Enjoy the cruise. A pragmatic option so you can still enjoy the Rolex on board.

There is a reason your insurance company excludes Mexico. Think about it.

it excludes europe as well which is statistically safer or what about Asia? Singapore would be about the safest place possible especially vs California.

Doesn't necessarily mean anything other than a policy tailored for a customer who doesnt go anywhere. Most policies i have seen and for sure every one i have had is worldwide cover. So if i go there with my watch, im covered.

Wear the watch on the ship if you must. You won't have to worry about the (predominantly) Sr. citizens guests stealing your Rokex. The tourist traps you'll visit off ship may present more of a risk.
I take it you haven't been on a cruise, if you have it was the wrong one.
I know a couple who spent over Ł6k for a week's holiday only to be very disappointed by the building site next door for example. If you pick the right cruise you can be sure of standards. I recommend Princess cruises and wearing a Rolex the whole time. Forget the safe just wear it maybe under a shirt cuff.

Thanks for the recommendation. I suppose I take issue with with the concept of cruises - they just don’t strike me as fun.

To be fair, it may be that the years I spent going to sea on freighters and oil tankers has colored my view.

The hotel / resort travel most certainly has risks as you mention...

I do think the “Is it safe...” genre of threads here need their own section

I wasnt born in Florida. Although there are some areas around here where it is definitely not safe to flash a Rolex, Florida is a pretty safe place. Not to mention that when I leave home in the morning I always make sure to have my watch and my carry piece.

Best advice coming from someone who lives there. Tourists are big targets. Not worth the risk. You may lose the watch along with an arm, or two.

I went to Havana in August, wife said not to bring the batman. I suggest being aware of your surroundings while in areas other than excursions. I walked out of a cigar shop and got bumped into a woman as I walked out of a narrow doorway. I just happened to change direction, turning around and I see a definate local dude looking at a dark blue booklet in his hands. Grabbed my shorts pocket immediately and felt my passport was gone. Confronted him and got it back with a little bit of physical persuasion as he tried to pull it away. I have been in a life long career having to depend on self awareness so it does pay off...

Flying back home. Wore Rolex in Cabo with a short sleeve shirt. Enjoyed it on the beach and in the ocean. Did not go anywhere besides that. Did not even get off the ship in the other two ports. My back was bothering me.

I checked with my insurance and my Rolex is only covered in the US, Canada

So I have 3 options.

1. Leave the Rolex in bank safe deposit box and wear my Steinhart Pepsi or Timex Ironman.

2. Wear the Rolex on the cruise and leave it in the safe in the room and put on another watch when we go to the 3 port cities.

3. Wear the Rolex all the time.

Any suggestions? I'm leaving in less than 12 hours so need to decide quickly.
Thank you.
I'd be more concerned about falling off the ship or the mere fact of going to Mexico.....as far as wearing a Rolex in these places,I'm pretty sure the answer is obvious!!!

I always bring a Rolex and a Seiko Turtle when I cruise. Rolex for on-board activities ... Seiko Turtle for excursions and beach ..
