228206 - decision

Hey guys,

I am seriously contemplating purchasing a 228206 with the ice blue dial. I love both of the dials but lean towards the look of the romans. The dark blue on the ice blue dial is stunning. That said, I have always preferred lumed indexes for the functionality so perhaps from a functionality perspective the sticks make more sense.

So a few things I wanted to ask:

1) Do those who have romans on a lighter dial find there are times when it is inconvenient at all not having the lume? Wondering about readability in low-light situations.
2) Tbh if the ice blue dial was offered in WG, I would probably go that route given cost and weight of the watch. It’s a big premium to pay of course. My concern here is the weight of the watch. I have a Platinum Lange and the weight doesn’t bother me at all, but holding it next to the DD it feels light of course given the Lange is on leather. Just wondering about wearability with the platinum Rolex’s. Obviously I will always know it’s there, but has anyone found it simply unwearable?
3) Fit of the president bracelet? Any issues here without any sort of extension?
4) I know what matters is what I like of course. But just curious which you guys thinks looks better.

Thanks a lot for any input!

-K

I like the numerals for that color face. I just got rid of my
Black motif face dd40. I do not like the motif look on the one you posted

i like the romans a lot more than the sticks on the ice blue dial. regarding the bracelet, its super comfortable but also hard to have a "perfect" fit, but if you prefer wearing your watches a bit loose you will love it

I love the motif dial and find my platinum Daytona is very comfy. I wear it every day. It is most comfortable when there is little slack in it, so maybe the lack of fine tune adjustment in the President might be an issue. IDK, as I’ve never owned one.

No first hand experience but if I was shopping for one I would go Roman. I can't imagine no lume would be an issue in most cases.

I prefer the motif dial with the lume sticks personally. But you should really go with whichever one you find more visually attractive imo.

The motif dial wins hands down between these 2.

But in saying that when your looking at a plat DD you cant go wrong with any choice to be honest

I’m in the same boat. I was leaning towards the Roman but when I saw the motif with stick dial I was sold!! Much more elegant imho

The motif with the stick dial is incredible. Thats my choice for that model, I'm just not quite ready to pull the pin yet. I have 2 more watches on my list I need to get first.

When l read 228206 l perked up. I've never had the opportunity to own a pure PM yet but tried on a DD40 at my ADs. I agree on the Romans, there both beauties but l find the lume practically useless for me. I wouldn't pass on the Romans for lume, get the dial you love. I did Romans on my DJ41 and never had a second thought afterwards. The Romans on the 228206 are pure art. I agree again with you and I'm sure others would too love to see that dial on a WG version. As far as the weight goes, you tried it on, even though it's heavy and substantial I'll bet it's not bulky or top heavy. Anyway, Happy Choosing to you!!!

3) Fit. The president bracelet is not adjustable, so just a heads up before you go down that road. There is a 1.25 link (or two if you need) to help with that, but they are hideously expensive-especially in platinum. If you're working with an AD, try to get them to agree to including what you need to get the right fit.

As far as looks, that's entirely subjective. Both look fantastic. I actually think overall legibility would be better with the Romans, as the hands tend to get lost in the lighter motif dials, IMO. I had the YG version and found that to be the case. Now, of course, you lose the lume with the Romans, but, I would rather have the legibility during the daylight hours TBH. My two cents.

the romans is the winner by a mile. lume is a non-issue on this watch. as previous poster said, worry more about legibility in daylight (it is not for nocturnal orientering after all). on chrono24 a fellow called Paul (nante horology i think) has a 118239 with a 118206 ice blue dial. i almost bought it. he offers the correct (dark blue sticks) dial with the watch too. of course that is 36 mm.

I prefer the Roman Numerals. I have owned three Platinum DD II's over the years and the Platinum Daytona and they are great watches. The question for me is always the same, do I want to tie up the resources in the Platinum model when I would still like some other models. For a time period I always say sure, I do, but then I wear the new off and end up moving on. I do believe there is nothing like a platinum watch from Rolex but you must decide if it is worth it to you. I would go WG, save the extra cash for another watch and move on. But I am also the guy who will talk himself into another Platinum watch at some point. I also would advise you that if you can buy pre-owned, do it. I would not even start the discussion with an AD for less than a 20% discount and try for 25% on a new watch. If you pay retail or close to retail you will get crushed on a trade or resale. Good luck.

Thanks a lot for the insight on the bracelet and legibility. I will definitely make sure to negotiate for the extra link. It’s tough to gauge how a bracelet will feel on a day to day basis sitting there at the AD. Having the extra link will cover me in case I walk out and realize I don’t like the fit a week later.

Wow... looks like the diagonal motif is winning by about 2:1.

So, generally I don’t involve my wife in any of my watch purchases because, well, she doesn’t care ha. But given the scale of the purchase I decided to ask which she preferred. I will say that in life she generally knows what I like better than I do. She will tell me to try something, I will resist for a few months, then try it and always love it. She is humble enough to not say “I told you so” :).

With that said, she really disliked the romans on the ice blue lol. She thought it was “too much” how much it popped and thought the diagonal motif was much nicer/classier. So, that’s another vote for the diagonal motif! To be fair, she hates the BLNR, which is among my favourites.

Going to go see the diagonal again today hopefully and the romans later this week!

Thanks for all the input so far guys.

K, you've heard my thoughts on this, but I'll say it here.

To start off, I personally preferred the diagonal dial. To me, that pattern is very dynamic, yet the lume markers make it pretty clean. I'm generally not a fan of the lume markers on the DD, but it somehow works with the Platinum because it has a smooth (as opposed to fluted bezel).

But I've since seen the Roman quadrant dial twice at my AD, and tried it on again yesterday. And it's definitely growing on me. I think it has the better legibility and has more contrast between the indices and the dial. The roman font is nice and modern, matching with the modern feeling glacier blue/smooth bezel. The quadrants also give it a bit of added depth. It might feel less 3D than the diagonal, but it's still amazing. And I think Ken's picture above shows you how the blue romans change colour in different lighting - beautiful shade of blue in natural lighting.

In sum, I don't think there is a bad choice here. You need to go with what your heart says on this one.
