Date window located at 4:30... yes or no?

What is the consensus for the 4:30 date window?

I don't have a strong opinion on the 4:30 date. I'm accustomed to a 3:00 or 6:00 date window, but as long as the dial is well-balanced/proportioned and has 'personality' I'd go with it.

I don't like date windows in general but if there has to be one, I'd prefer it to be at six o'clock so that the dial remains symmetrical, such as what Omega has done with their new Seamasters. My second choice is for the date to be at three o'clock like most manufactures use. A date at 4:30 looks okay with a three dialed chronograph, such as on the Breitling Navitimer, but I don't really like it on a time only watch, such as AP's latest travesty, the Code 11.59.

I'm a fan - doesn't mess up the symmetry of the hour markers.

I think the 2254.50 omega is at about the 4 o clock area. It works well on that watch. I can’t see anything in the Rolex line working at 4. We are so used to 3pm.

For me, the 4:30 date window works well when done properly.

Never understood the hate towards the date @ 4:30. I don't mind it at all.

3 for 3

Glashutte is interesting

Code is awful
And
Agree on the less is more appreciation. That Patek is simply perfect.

Depends on watch and how well integrated the aperture is with the indices. Given a choice I prefer 6 o'clock position. All to often they are a distraction and break up the symmetry of a dial.

Overall I prefer no date or one at 6:00, although 4:30 doesn’t bother me if well executed. I actually like it on this GS. It gives it a little different look.

Paul did an excellent job of showing properly done, horribly done, and simple.

I agree that it depends on the watch dial in question, but I am not completely opposed to the look. Is there a watch in question you were thinking of, Gus, or just a feeler to see what others think?

Definitely depends on the watch (and the direction of writing and if the date wheel is color matched)

I like it on the VC overseas, especially the white dial since it doesn't contrast as much. I like it on the GO, like the one above, where the text is horizontal too.

There are a lot of watches that I don't like it on though, usually black or dark colored dials with white date wheel.

It’s one of the things that bugs me about the Fifty Fathoms, and I’ve tried just about everything to talk myself into buying one. Sorry, not a fan (thank goodness)

Agree with pretty much everything said here. My top choice would be a date on the outter peripheries of the dial, with a dedicated hand (like the FPJ octa calendrier).

I actually generally find date windows to be a nuisance (especially if they don't have a quick-set date function).

I voted no as I really prefer when it is not at 4:30 but I can live with it if I like the rest of the watch. I would just prefer it were somewhere else in a perfect world.

It doesn't bother me on my Navitimer.

I agree that most of the time no date looks nicely balanced, however I do like a date due to practical reasons. I write down the date 100 times per day

Btw Glasshutte did a terrific job with that date window

I like a date and I'll take it on a case by case basis. My preference is for a dial colored date wheel, and I think the Fifty fathoms nailed the 4:30 version- it's there if you look for it, but otherwise it just blends in:

I dithered over picking up a GS SBGE201 due to the glaring white datewheel at 4:30 that stuck out in pics. Now I have one, it actually doesn't bother me one bit....

Agree I like when the date wheel is color matched to the dial.
AP generally does a nice job integrating the date.

Too many times I find date windows are squeezed in and made just small enough to be visually useless, Cartier is the worst offender that comes to mind, often in the 6 o’clock position. In contrast to rolex cyclops over the date window, if it’s going to be so small to be difficult to read, why not just leave it out...

A too small date window kind of reminds me of the male come over, just go with dignity and eliminate the hair.

Generally I strongly dislike date windows af 4:30... the watch would have to be amazing in many other ways to overcome that negative if I were to buy it. I’ll take a date window at 3, 6, 12 (VC, Lange) or 1 (Lange) over one at 4:30.

My opinion isn't strong for any placement, but the thing that I like about the 4:30 location is that it allows for the hour markers to be complete-- no chopped or missing markers. I've yet to see a dial that was improved by replacing an hour marker with a date window.
