I would discuss that Grand Seiko might be the number one watch based on design, dependability and value for the money. But many will not consider anything not Swiss. In the end it will be about what you like and desire to wear.
I second this totally!

Have to agree but today top rankings by many are down to the price, and many have no idea about the Seiko Grand brand as many today just wear a brand and not the watch. And many being stereotyped to brand names as soon as some see the word Seiko or ETA it automatically means cheap lower grade.

The holy trinity doesn’t have a ton of weight for me.....the bulk of those pieces, I enjoy but I’d never buy..... Service on an ROC (which I love) cost a fortune, I’d be scared to death to swim in a nautilus (not to mention it’s technical inferiority to much of its competition) and the overseas chrono (which I also love) holds value like a Kia. So......my real world top watch brand list would have to look like a few others on here.....

Rolex
Seiko (on quality and detail alone)

Genuinely surprised Grand Seiko/Credor don’t even hit the top ten in many people’s lists. Is it down to a lack of prestige or maybe some aren’t aware how good the really are (in all areas) or maybe some disagree that they are?

Movement and finish seem to be on a par with PP (Credor probably has no equal) and a lot of GS customers are PP owners frustrated with waiting lists.

I prefer Rolex now for various different reasons but just seems wrong that GS don’t hit the top five or Credor the top 3. Surely both should at least be in the top ten?

If you're talking about "best" it's totally subjective. But "well known" should include Omega, no? Maybe one in a hundred people have heard of Chopard. I've never heard of Titan.

Does anyone think Cartier comes close to breaking the top 10?

I believe Cartier has made important contributions regarding case design and for as long as I have been collecting I have admired some of their watches. Actually waiting delivery of my first, been hunting since I began collecting.

I would absolutely include them in a list of serious watches. As well I would include Panerai for there original, unique proven design.

Like Cartier, Panerai are not known for in house movements. they each existed for the significant part of their days using outsourced movements. (JLC and rolex among them.)

I wouldn’t want to know a world of watches without them in it.
