My perspective is from that of a touring car racer - yours from open cockpit mostly? Just guessing from your avatar.

Now as an official who is responsible to safely grow amateur autosports, I have gained a perspective that “safe is fast” and the two are not mutually exclusive.

As long as it has a motor in it, people will race....until OPM gives out.

I did some tin tops but 95% of my racing has been in single seaters, yes.

To be honest, I see motorsports in general dying a slow and painful death, this is only part of the reason. Electric race cars, sim racing, money running the sport more than ever before (was always the case but has become worse), gentleman racers at all levels (even Lemans), etc. It has become a big business and losing itself as a sport/passion in my opinion.

I still race and as the father of two young boys getting into karting now, this very much saddens me. I think Grassroots will be safe for a while but only a matter of time before this all trickles down. Kids coming into our class and seeing tube frame chassis' and dog boxes they need to manually operate are appalled! No carbon tubs and flappy paddles! The travesty.....

Well, the last pro-race using stick shift in IMSA took place last year. None left in FIA. So the kids are right - learn that paddle stuff!

On the grassroots front, that Will eventually happen. But one man’s demise is another’s rise. Our numbers are up across the board - which is a sign the next bear market is coming...

Whilst I do not agree with Fangio that in modern F1 it is "95% car" I do think that the car (and luck) is much more important than the driver.
There are at least half a dozen drivers currently in F1 that could have won 3 or 4 World Championships with a car as dominant as the Mercedes.
The "best driver" is whoever you fancy - based on your own rationale.
