Help me decide between a :

Used Rolex Datejust Steel White Gold Fluted Bezel 16234 for $4400

or

A new Oyster perpetual 39mm for $5700.

And why?

I am looking for a versatile watch that can be business dressy and casual.

Currently own a SS Submariner as EDC.

Thank you for all your opinions.

I would usually go new but would consider the used DJ if the condition is good.

Op for me. Those 39mm versions are sweet plus there are a few dial options.

I’d also toss a new explorer 1 into the mix. You get the nicer clasp on the explorer

I have a 114060 as an everyday and a 16233 as a dress/change up option. I say go for the DJ. It's classic Rolex in a way that, for me at least, the OP doesn't quite reach.

First off, welcome to the forum! As for your question, neither! My choice would be the OP 36mm blue explorer dial at $5,400. That one is on my radar and my AD has one but a Disney trip for the family took priority.

Welcome. Tough choice. Do you need/want the date function? Are you tough on your watches? So much so, that a new 5 year warranty is worth the extra $$? Depending upon which DJ dial, though, I'd likely get the OP. Note, I have the rhodium OP39, which I think is a great watch. I also enjoy a new DJ36.

By the time you factor in a service on the used watch, the new price is not that far away, so in my opinion the smart money would be on the new watch.

We are not talking about very rare and highly desirable models here as far as vintage is concerned, so the peace of mind that the extra $5-600 would bring with a new watch and movement, warranty .... and your name on the card(?) ... its a no brainer for me.

I would definitely go OP39mm. I'd be looking at the black, white and Rhodium dials.
The new white one looks particularly sharp. I haven't seen the black dial in person but I hear it's very nice too.
I would prefer the more casual look without the fluted bezel and the more modern bracelet.

Datejust Steel White Gold Fluted Bezel is iconic, classic and classy. if you can get a modern version 116234 even better.

OP. I like the 39mm size over the 36 of the DJ. I think the smooth bezel of the OP does dressy better than the flueted bezel of the DJ does casual.

The key, to me, is your desire for versatility. If you wanted something dressier, lean to the DJ (though 36 is too small for me so I’d consider the 41). But for versatility, i.e., casual too, I think the OP works better as with the smith bezel, it does casual better.
