Daytona 116500 Gritty Manual Wind

Hey Y’all. I know this topic has been covered in previous threads, but just wanted to get some updated feedback.

3 weeks ago I purchased a BNIB 116500 and everything was great until yesterday morning. It was a few days since I wore it, so the watch was stopped, as such I wound it up as normal. Out of nowhere, there was a noticeable gritty feel when winding with the crown. I pulled crown to 2nd position and cycled the hands, but no improvement. Watch is still running great at +/-0.6spd.

My plan at this point is to let the watch run down power reserve completely and attempt to wind from complete stop.

Should note that the gritty feel through the crown is primarily felt when winding fast. When winding the crown slow, it feels more normal. I’m kinda scratching my head how this could happen so abruptly. It would make more sense to me if it occurred gradually overtime.

I have a few Rolex’s and all have very similar crown feel when winding, including the Daytona up until yesterday.

Any feed back is appreciated. Main concern at this point is not damaging the movement

Thanks guys!

Had this happen before on a 116520. Took it to the authorized (at the time) service center in SF and they said it needed some lube. They fixed it and it was normal after. Let it wind down first to make sure it’s not the over winding clutch.

There is no clutch all that happens when the mainspring is fully wound it just slips in the spring-barrel in all Rolex automatics.

It’s definitely not the slip in the mainspring when fully wound as I’m familiar with what that feels like. I’m just kind of surprised how suddenly the problem came about. One day fine, next day gritty. Hopefully it rectifies itself once the movement runs down completely and is restarted. If not I guess of to RSC NYC...

Figured I revive this thread one more time to see if any 116500 owners have experienced this or really anyone with a newer 4130 calibre? I’ve had watches with 3132,3135,3186,3187 and all have been overall smoother in the winding department. Just not sure if the 4130 has a different feel when winding? If not, then off to RSC NYC

Any feedback is appreciated

Thanks guys!

I have recently experienced this a couple weeks ago and feel a little better that I’m not alone. The watch runs great as usual but when fully powered down and then winding there is a noticeable gritty feel. I will continue to observe this.

Thought I would revive this with my observations. For months I’ve wound my watch with this abnormally gritty feel thinking it was normal. Then recently (a few days ago) it became grittier to the point that it would stick and you cannot wind it. After leaving it alone for a bit I can wind it again but the “stop” will happen again.

I went to my local AD to have them feel the winding and they confirmed it was abnormally gritty as well. Got my warranty card and asked them to send it to RSC Dallas. I’m looking forward to getting a better Daytona back in 4 weeks!

Will miss it dearly! At least the Deepsea and Sky Dweller will get more wrist time! Will keep everyone posted!

My black dial is slightly “grittier” than my white. White is nearly silky smooth. Most silky is my Sd4k.

I feel like this was happening when I got my 116500. After a while it felt much smoother when winding.

I have a 114300 Oyster Perpetual 39. When i got it new, the winding was smooth. Wore it everday, 8 months later i also started noticing that it was gritty when winding. When i adjust the time there no sound, only during winding.

I still have 4 more years left on the warranty. Still keeps great time, about 1 sec a day, and the power reserve is running around 49 hours. Figure that i will just fix it right before the warranty expires.

I searched around on the internet, and it seems alot of people have this problem.

I'd say you have an issue there. My 116500 winds like butter.

Experiencing the same thing right now - a gritty feel when winding. Guess I need to take it to RSC.

Just got the Daytona back yesterday (not bad - 4 weeks turnaround from the RSC). Now it winds very smooth with no abnormal gritty feel. Just wanted to update with my conclusion on this issue for reference.
