The detail on the Cartier seven

I might as well get as much use as I can from my new lens. Here's the detail on the seven that occurs on all cartiers with ruman numerals. This is on my circa 1976 Santos. It's a great dress watch but in need of some refinishing. (Too many small scratches).

That's fantastic, Adrian. I got out my Cartier tank watch (early '80s vintage), and took a look at the VII with my jeweler's loupe. Sure enough - there it was! It is really much too small to see with the naked eye (especially with MY eyesight).

Excellent!!! That macro lens of yours is unbelievable!!!

I had exactly the same watch! The jeweler replaced the strap with a very nice Piaget aligator strap free of charge. I sold it later on.

I'm quite pleased with it but I do use some digital enlarging as well. With 12 megapixels you can increase it quite a bit.

Again, HOLY MOLEY!!! I have a Canon with 8 megapixels, and thought that was heavy-duty. Jeez Adrian, you could look at the molecules in the "Cartier" logo on your Santos with that!!!

Congrats on a fine camera AND a fine macro lens!

I love mine. I wear it, but not as much as the Rolexes. The watch is completely original, including the strap. I have kept it in mint condition. My wife has one just like it, but a smaller version. They are definitely "dress" watches - much too small to wear for anything else.

Do you know the case is solid silver with gold plating? The best way to do it bar solid gold of course, or do you have the solid gold version?

Excellent macro, Adrian. I was aware of this small anti-counterfeiting trait that Cartier developed years ago.

If I'm not mistaken, virtually every Cartier with Romans has their name printed on the V of the Roman VII.

Yes, I had the Vermeil version. But is was perhaps the biggest mistake I ever made in my watch purchases. Not because of the watch itself but what I did to buy it. I sold a beautiful Santos Carré (all steel) for it, the first 1979 edition with life-time warrantee. My brother is the lucky owner of this watch and it has been returned to the factory no less than 4 times for a complete overhaul. Each time it returns sealed in blue plastic looking brand sparkling new. Oh, how I regret this sale. And the watch really suits my brother well, he’s a chef in a good restaurant and guys like him usually wear watches like that. The bracelet is a work of art!

Sorry to hear about that, Frans. We all tend to do things we later regret. Fortunately, my watch purchases are not among them, but there are plenty of other things I can place in the regret column.
