Exactly trouble today Rolex watches are seen by some as little more than ££££$$$$$.

Just spotted - A certain preowned site has a 16622 in "fine" condition with B&P for £4,699. (Other sites have them between £5-6k).
Ok it's the 5 digit but on this model it's hard to spot the difference. In fact the older ones have a slightly more sparkly dial and slightly stronger red YACHT MASTER lettering. My wife has the midsize version and it's absolutely gorgeous. We bought it new several years ago at decent discount from an AD but I don't ever see us selling it as my wife loves it and can't find another watch she likes as much. Hope that helps, |

Exactly. Rolex is a luxury watch to be used and enjoyed. Once it is too expensive for some owners to comfortably purchase, it seems to become a commodity and form of currency. Forget about resale on a watch you probably would never sell if you loved it and made memories with it on your wrist. What is even more disturbing is when a honest Rolex is actually used and are dismissed as "over polished" and avoided like the plague.
Now the new Rolex owner is scared to any minor maintenance polishing for fear of devaluing their watch????? I have not lost hope yet cause there are still guys like DrTom using a platinum Daytona on the race track without hesitation, not worried about every nick and scratch.

They made slight changes like where the bracelet lugs meet the case.

If you like the watch, 28% off from the AD is fantastic, just make sure it's the upgraded 116622, not some old stock 16622. Much better clasp + easy link bracelet extension, 120 clicks on bezel (against 60), parachrome hairsping, end links 100% aligned with lugs, full links on entire bracelet (not just end links), blue long lasting Chromalight, +2 -2 s/d .
YMs depreciate quite a bit and steel+plat tend to bottom out at EUR 6-7 K (chrono24 sample). If you're not a fan, I don't think you'll lose much money if at all. You're buying low. I'd go for it. |

Based on the comments and questions, this is a solid no. NO. Do NOT buy it.

Probably too late but I had one, flipped it back within 6 months. Might sound odd, but I was terrified of screwing up the bezel. The cost to replace the bezel should it get damaged to that point, was almost more than I paid for the watch. Again might sound silly, just my $.02.

It is a great watch. Me and my wife have the same ones with the platinum dial 35mm and 40mm. I think its a great watch because you can dress anyway you choose with this model. I know they just discontinued the platinum dial and now its rhodium.

I got a 16622 back a few years ago and never regretted it. I know these have some love or hate relationships with TRF members. And yes I have the platinum dial. As for the bezel being uber fragile I wear it like a woman wears a fine set of pearls. It's the last thing on and the first thing off. Now that the platinum dial is discontinued I'll like it even more.

Since, it's been bumped....the OP's perspective makes me cringe. Stop buying to store in a safe. That's just not too smart for anyone and to be honest storing an unusable hunk of metal that isn't gold bullion is kind of |

Since it's been bumped, I'll chime in.
OP was asking about future value retention of the 116622 plat. dial. Back in 2015, you could find a grey BNIB stickered unworn for 8,000 to 8,500 euros, MSRP at ADs was a whopping 11,350 were I live (Spain. 21% tax), almost two grand more than the blue YM at the time, similar price to a steel Daytona (ooops). Today it'll cost you between 9,900 and 10,500 euros unworn stickered (chrono24). So that's about 24% up in 4 years (comparing unworn BNIBs). Not much but at least it hasn't lost value. Although not a popular watch, the fact it's a discontinued model (plat. dial) might play in its favour. Sports steel shortage might be another reason. The previous 16622 plat dial can be had for 6,500 euros (worn) and could be considered a better value proposition, but that's a 1999 model, a 20 years old design with its sub-par clasp, stretched hollow links, protruding end links, no blue Parachrom hairspring, no blue chromalight). I bought my 116622 in 2015 because I really wanted that albino look. I like the fact the dial blends with the bezel, there's little contrast and only the red second hand and red text pop out. You need a lot of light for it to come alive. It likes being understated most of the time, a sleeper of sorts. You look at it and see platinum "everywhere" as if it was carved from a single block of metal, you could fool yourself into thinking you're wearing a platinum watch based on appearance only. You see, I already had utilitarian and very capable black divers with plenty contrast. This YM was different, it didn't try to compete with the toolwatches, didn't need to. Being more classy and sophisticated, it's just perfect as it is, a beautiful work of art, to me anyway. It's unique in my collection. To like this watch you need to really appreciate the monochrome look more than anything else and that's probably the most polarising element. I'm convinced it will become a sought after piece, but I don't care. I'm just happy wearing mine :-). |

The 16622 is an excellent value as its much less than the 116622 and 99% the same watch.
The 116622, not as much, but still very nice. |

Buy it because you like it. Speaking of tag, it's the one watch I will not buy from a store. Got my 8k grand Carrera still new in box and never worn for 2k on the secondary market. I bought it because I love it, not because it would gain value.
