White gold or steel Daytona?

I have come to the conclusion that rather than wait years for a new Daytona I will bite the bullet and buy now from what's available.

The 2 models I like are the white gold with the blue dial and the steel with the ceramic bezel and white dial. At my go to dealer there isn't that much price difference with the steel going for double retail and the gold at slightly below.
I genuinely like both and will wear most of the time.

On the one hand it seems crazy to me to pay so much for the steel but with the way the market is heading it probably won't be long before the steel is worth more than the gold one? Or is the point at which prices meet the point at which the heat comes out of the market?

Any thoughts?

I don’t like to speculate pricing, but if you are saying it’s between paying a grey for SS or buying at retail for a WG, I say go for WG.

I’ll be the first to say it, but the one you want. OK, we got that out of the way. Personally, I would buy the WG without even thinking about it. It’s such a nicer watch. Hopefully you can try on both and decide.

WG all day every day.

The case is slightly bigger and symmetrical. There's something about a PM Daytona that SS just cannot match. And that blue dial is beautiful.

The only downside is that the WG bezel is more prone to scratches, whereas he cerachrome isn't.

But that's small price to pay for what is unquestionably the nicer watch

No right or wrong here, both around the same price - so will come down to the one you prefer.

For me steel was the one to have as it was mainly the bezel that pushed me that way.
The various minor differences in dial will also swing it one way or the other.
Weight may do it as the gold is heavier although the gold wearers on here assure me that you get used to this very quickly. Might be a big difference if you rotate steel / gold watches though

If you are counting votes (as many people are in this country at the moment!), mine is for white face steel 116500.

The WG Daytona is stunning but yes the bezel did make me think twice. In the end I’ve put the decision on hold. The SS would be an easier decision but I’m not yet prepared to go for a preowned model

Would you rather have a man made ceramic bezel or all gold bezel? I think the gold Daytonas are pure fire, much more desirable. The current value gap is just a bonus to help justify it.

I would go with the WG as the potential for significant loss in value is less than with the SS Daytona-C. If money was not an object then do what you please or if this is a lifetime watch then the SS could be the one. To think that the market will stay like this is not a real option. It may get worse before it gets better but it will change. A slightly discounted PM Daytona will lose thousands on the second hand market but no where near the potential to lose almost half of the 22-24K you will have to pay for SS. I would close the gap even more by finding a mint pre-owned WG Daytona that is complete with box, papers and most of the warranty left. A few extra thousand makes a difference. I love the 509 blue, but honestly, if you're considering a WG daytona, I would take a look at the oyster flex model as well.

WG without question. SS Daytona is only if you want to spend 12k in my opinion.

I have the black ceramic Daytona, and honestly my sub c feels more substantial in terms of weight,etc. there is no way no matter how bad it’s desired that that watch is a 20k+ watch. I feel kind of surprised sometimes that I did pay 12k as it feels more like a 8-9k watch, I’d be kicking myself if I paid 22k for one, but hey to each their own. Don’t get me wrong, very nice piece but, it’s become a bit of a cult


PM any day over steel if the money works.

Another vote for the WG in blue, it's gorgeous. I also do not believe that the current hysteria around SS pricing will be sustainable.

Don't pay retail for the Daytona. You can pick one up in the states at a reputable reseller like that guy in Florida for enough of a savings that it will pay for the trip for two of you with money left over.

It is rare that the two will ever cost approximately the same. WG should hold its value as opposed to stainless which could easily fall to MSRP or lower. Buy WG and let SS sit until the price comes down.

The premium on SS is just too damn high right now. Given your two choices, I’d go WG. There’s just something about a PM piece that can’t be beat.

Thanks everyone for all the advice on this thread. I bought the WG version. It's a year old and it really is a thing of beauty. I'm sure the SS one is also great but although it is no doubt a trick of the mind, this gold one just seems tro have a softness to it that I haven't found with any watch before. I'm staring at it far too much already!
