I just got called a "Baller" at the grocery store.

I've been shopping at the same Publix (a grocery store popular in Florida) for a number of years. I am always friendly to the employees, and they to me.
I occasionally will wear one of my more expensive watches while shopping.
There's a very friendly guy in the produce department who i always see checking out what i am wearing.
This morning, I say hi and notice he is wearing a chronograph and i compliment him on his watch. He says thanks and glances down at my left wrist.
I am not wearing one this morning so I said "No watch for me!".
He says " I know better. You're a baller!"
I just laughed.
Never doubt that people do notice.

I had never heard that expression (UK)

I guess some people notice and some don't, but that applies to everything about you - your clothes, car, lifestyle, house etc

At least at Publix I can order a "Sub" and take it home with me the same day! From the deli.

BTW, do you drive a Ferrari or a Lambo when you go to Publix?

I’d never heard of the term, so looked it up in the urban dictionary.

A thug who has made the big time?! Not sure I’d treat that as a compliment!!

But, I’m bound to be missing some subtle cultural nuance!

A baller is someone who performs at the top of their game, whatever that game is. When you're ballin', you're kicking a55 and taking names. It's definately a compliment.

You must live in the Ghetto? J/K
I use to live in Delray, Boynton and Boca Raton Florida. We never used that term. I’m surprised to hear that, I suspect this wasn’t a teenager, but rather someone maybe in their 30s as I suspect when you referenced him as guy. I wouldn’t consider it but maybe it is a timeless phrase.

When i had the POS Bentley GTC i did. Our Publix has valet parking.

Kept shopping at Publix, yet dumped the Bentley GTC due to the many engineering flaws $$,$$$ the factory refuses to recall.

Excellent! I’ve learned something today. Will slip into my conversations at work in London and test the reaction. I bet the youngsters understand ...

There's even more to this.

- "Ball is life"
- "Hoop dreams"
- "He's a hooper"
- "Ball so hard"
- Throwing something into your office wastebin and shouting "Kobe!" in anticipation of it going in
