I work with and for some petty people who cry poor-house, but live in massive houses, drive or lease newish vehicles, and spend a fair amount on smokes, booze, and dining out.
I’ve definitely tucked the Rolex under a sleeve before certain interactions. |

I’m a sales rep in an industry where everyone makes good money, everyone knows it, yet it’s absolutely frowned upon to wear an expensive watch. It’s just considered bragging, and poor taste. I haven’t had a manager the past 10 years that did not make a comment at one time or another criticizing someone for wearing an expensive watch to work. Kinda sucks! Tudor is about as nice as I’ll go for a daily driver nowadays.

I think I already replied to this thread. Not really sure, but since it popped back up...
No, I’m not a whiny pussy that worries about what other people think, so I wear a Rolex to work every day, and If people don’t like it, they can go pound sand up their ass. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Thankfully I live in a county where the quality of life is high and resentment towards people who have nice things is low (ie: not the UK) so I would have no qualms about wearing my new Rolex Oyster perpetual 39mm to work... it's a discreet watch anyway, no bling.
I know a couple of others who wear Rolexes at work anyway. |

I've worn my sub everywhere, every day for the last 4 years. Except for friends and family that knew about my purchase, I've had maybe 3 people notice at all outside of work (and watch stores lol), and only 2 colleagues ever noticed at work. Both were below my rank so to speak. In most settings, work or otherwise, nobody cares notices and nobody cares.

I've had a read through this thread and there have been some interesting, surprising and sometimes shocking posts. Three main concerns stand out:
1. Employee does not want to look like a show-off or give others an inferiority complex 2. Boss does not like employees wearing a Rolex 3. Employee does no want to upstage boss Number 1 I can understand depending on what you do for work, as if you are doing a menial job then the chances are that a Rolex is going to be far out of reach of the people you are working with and could easily engender resentment. However, in any office environment then of course it is fine to wear a Rolex, and if anyone doesn't like it then screw them. However numbers 2 and 3 are really falling into the category of "wtf" and I feel sorry for people who are genuinely affected by these unfortunate situations. Firstly, it's nothing to do with the boss what watch his employee wears unless it is in an industry where overt displays of wealth are really not recommended or not appropriate. However under normal circumstances, screw what he thinks, as long as you do your job then that's all he has to be concerned about. Secondly, the last thing you should be worrying about is "upstaging" your boss unless he is one of those petty and deeply insecure bullies who makes peoples lifes a misery, in which case you should report him to HR and/or find a new job regardless of what you wear on your wrist. If someone dared to ever criticise me or make snarky jealous comments for wearing a Rolex in the workplace when there was otherwise no ethical or professional reason not to then they would get an extremely frosty reaction. |

Everyday for 36 years. I didn't care what other people thought. I had a few colleagues who also owned and wore a Rolex to work, mostly Subs and DJ. I worked for an oil company and it was not unusual to see a Rolex.

My dad used to say, “son, if you go through life worrying what others think of you, you’re gonna have a really miserable life!”
I rotate through my SD, BLNR and RG DD. The RG DD definitely gets the most attention. The SD and BLNR mostly slip under the radar. As Jack Forster wrote, “the Day-Date hideth not itself under a bushel” or something to that effect. I actually find myself wearing the DD almost daily now it’s so comfortable. But, I just don’t flash it around. I try to remain humble knowing 1) I don’t deserve a watch like this; 2) Like everything in this world of material value, “...it’s on loan” 3) It was a gift from my wife and reflects her love and care for me. |

yes, and most people don't realise what watch i have and i'm actually more than fine with that. the watch is there to tell me the time and give me some satisfaction of achieving and deserving to wear one on my wrist.

I wouldn't think twice about wearing a nice watch in the workplace. Generally speaking, your colleagues (including your boss) are by association in a similar scenario as yourself and could probably also have a Rolex if they wanted.
No doubt a Rolex is a decent chunk of change to most, but some people are happy to spend money on the latest mobile phone release, coffees each morning, fashion fads and eating/drinking out all the time. It's amazing how quickly this can add up. Each to their own but I get more enjoyment out of, and would much rather have a nice watch. The only exception I'd make is if I may need to interact with members of the public, who's circumstances may not be the same as mine and whereby wearing a nice watch may be a little crass. |

A lot of this is all relative to were you are in your career and age range.
I don’t wear my DJ to work as a I see it as a bit too flashy. Also brining too much attention to myself. Also factoring in my age i saw more possible negatives than positives. It’s the culture of my office back handed comments when people get a new car. At the same time I’ve seen people waste money on jet skis, electric bikes, alcohol have a large house etc. Each to their own though, I like a nice watch and always try and dress smartly and own nice clothes, along with a nice cologne. |

For at least me, I have been in the same position for 10 years and being in IT that looks pretty bad, as if I couldn't move up. For me, it means taking a significant pay cut to move up so I never cared to. Most would think I make much less already so dressing nicer explains that this guy must be doing well with finances. I don't however have a Rolex but maybe soon, never really liked the designs until more recently as they have grown on me. |
