i just rang 8 seperate AD's

To get a feel for the market, 2 and a half years after buying my gmt, which was pretty hard to get at the time, but not impossible, after hearing people say that it is getting easier to source one,

The response was a resounding no to any chance whatsoever of an SS sports model,

Not, half a chance, or if you come immediately today, or its possible on monday, just an outright zero chance, one AD said its a hundred times worse than 2 and a half years ago.

So there it is. But you knew that anyway.

thats going to be a non starter even if they had something.

I agree its worse, especially in the UK, but you cant gauge anything on the phone

There are SS out there. I've had a Sub and AirKing from my AD after getting a 10% discount on a Rhodium Fluted Datejust in March of last year. I have also bought a Tudor Heritage Chrono and Speedmaster from them this year also. Have been promised a Hulk for next year. They tell me people phone them daily from London asking if they have anything as they think as they are not in London they may have stock. I only buy watches I want but it does take money to build a relationship with an AD now.

Every time I walk into an AD to talk about watches they express their annoyance with the hundreds of calls they get everyday asking for SS models. So it’s no surprise you got shut down.

Go by public transport so at least you get some exercise and some good out of the trip.

imagine being that arrogant, that 'they express their annoyance' when hundreds of people ring them, wanting to buy their products,

they can stick their elusive products where the sun never shines.

As indicated above it doesn’t matter what you asked over the phone you were always going to get the same answer. Clearly in the current market going in person isn’t going to increase your chances enough that picking up an SS will be easy or even possible.

What is certain though is that if you enquire about “all SS” pieces, you will definitely be rebuffed. It will trigger the AD’s flipperdar.

The phone will get you NOWHERE! Go to an AD in person, spend some $$$$. That is the only way you will sniff a steel sport model at retail in the current market.

I don’t understand why people call and think they are going to get a chance on anything.

All these threads beating the same topic into the ground.

I don’t look at it as them being arrogant. I would be annoyed as well.

Now you know how poor old J R Hartley felt. Unfortunately "good old Yellow Pages" isn't going to help in this case.

Yep they’re getting cheesed off with dozens of calls a day.
Pick a local AD, get to know them and spend some £££$$$. There is no easy meal ticket..

nah, i dont want to know them, i was just comparing with when i rang in 2017, just to see if it is any better, back then people had submariners if you wanted to get in the car on the day and do 200 miles, that was considered difficult, totally different to now.

Oh yeh totally different market now.
It’s a sellers market and they “select” the customer.

Re-think that if you can. Depending on what you are looking for, and if you shop carefully, you can go grey and do fine.

Takes a little patience but you'll be wearing the watch instead of bitching that you can't get it...

Some excellent grey dealers here...

Good luck, either way.

A phone conversation is very different to a face to face conversation.....put yourself in their position, what would you say to a stranger who just phoned up on the off chance when you have actual well known clients to look after...?

I think most AD's just say that to get back to people who have cash in hand in the shoppes.

Its like calling every pizza place for a single customized slice --- and you're still asking for 5% off.

Must be a UK attitude thing from the AD’s, because in Canada I have had pretty good success cold calling - in fact I am picking up a DSSD next month after completing the payments to the AD. I had found it just by calling around a few stores over a 2-3 week period.

Last year I called an AD in Vancouver when I was living in Alberta and was able to get an Exp II - Polar as long as I showed up in person for the purchase. Also used the same method.

Before that I would just buy from my regular AD from whom I have been purchasing since 2013 but it’s obviously gotten so bad now that I figure I’ll just start calling around and hopefully score something.

Mind you at no point was I keeping any high hopes to score a GMT or Hulk - and before this craziness started I never even considered a DSSD. My point is that calling around seems to vary from market to market just don’t put a blanket statement on it just because it sucks in the UK.
