It is 100% situational for me. Barbers, waitstaff, letter carriers? Always and I generally tip more than whatever formula would require. For most over the counter transactions, I do not tip or give gifts. For things that have a more special connection for me, I tend to do gifts. When I used to race bicycles, I regularly brought my shop mechanic beers or coffee or small things like that. I picked up the guys dinner tab one night when I saw him out at the neighborhood restaurant. I am not a high roller by any means, so throwing around cash is not my style or goal. Sharing a few nice things between people is always appreciated and I enjoy being a part of the gifting. If/when I get my call for a new watch, I will probably gift a nice bottle or a gift card. I don't **feel** like I am sucking up or bribing anyone, but I guess it is possible that others know me better than I know myself.
