The problem is not any particular location. It's about being unfamiliar with the location, how safe areas can rather rapidly transition to unsafe ones, and looking like a tourist. I was in San Francisco about 10 years ago doing a shoot on a boat parked at the docks there. The waterfront area is very nice and mostly safe. Back in the hotel at night we could literally hear the front desk staff begging foreign tourists not to walk to other popular areas of the city that were literally blocks away and take a cab. "But it's right there (pointing at a map)! Just 5 blocks! 10 minute walk! Why drive?!?!?"
