Replace the face?

Hi, I have my grandfathers Rolex that is 46 years old I took it in to see what it would take to get working adn was told it needed a tune up, new crystal and new face? Cost $250. I am planing on giving it to my brother for college graduation. And wanted to make sure replacing the face would not destroy the value. I do not know what model as it is still at the repair shop it was given to my grandfater in 1965 and has a leather band. Any advise would be appreciated.
