As a Nikon user (currently D700), I'd be quick to suggest anything Nikon but I bought a Canon T2i for my dad and really liked the camera. I find Canon menus to be more user friendly, especially for a beginner. Either way, you can't go wrong.

On a side note, a 105mm macro on your D3100 will shoot much longer than the stated size. The D3100 has a 1.56 crop factor so that 105mm is effectively a 163.5mm. I would suggest the Nikon 60mm macro 2.8 which runs 1/2 the price of the 105mm.
