Crown malfunctioning on GMT Master II

I have a ~5 year old GMT Master II 116713LN that has developed a problem with the crown. I pulled the crown out today all the way to reset the watch for our exit from DST, set it, and pushed it back in. I could tell something didn't feel right as it went back in. It's always been a little quirky, as all crowns are, and has its own "feel" -- and now it's different.

Initially I couldn't even get it to pull out all the way again. I can get it to the wind point, and if I tinker within I can get it to the hour-hand set point, and then tinkering some more I can sometimes get it to the time-set point, but ... it's not consistent.

I'm thinking I just bought myself a trip to the watchmaker, but curious about any opinions here before I make that trip. I'm a troubleshooter by nature, and while I certainly don't trust myself to open this thing up with any expectation of success, I'm curious if there's anything I *can* do without opening it. Should I let it wind all the way down and then try? This sound like something anyone has seen before?

Thank you!
