CHOOSING A ROLEX MODEL: matter of aesthetics alone OR age and affordability?

just sitting here wondering whether members of this forum in a particular age group tend to buy specific models/types.

i could be generalising but i feel the older members of the forum do tend to lean towards materials other than say ss, opting for tt or gold etc; and having fussier dial options etc.

is this the case of aesthetics alone or simply that they can afford the more expensive options, your thoughts please...
