On the bus

A guy misses his normal bus and catches the following one. There are a bunch of people he has never seen. Suddenly, one calls out ‘forty two’ and everyone starts laughing. This goes on for a while with a succession of numbers, and our man is puzzled. During a lull he asks the passenger next to him what is going on.

‘Well,’ he says, ‘we have all been catching this bus for years and telling the same jokes over and over, so to save time we gave them all numbers’.

‘I see.’ says our man, doubtfully.

Just then someone calls out ‘fifteen’ and no-one laughs. Rather, everyone groans. ‘Wasn’t that one funny?’ asked our man, to which the regular replied, ‘Oh, yes it’s funny enough. But that’s Fred for you - couldn’t tell a joke to save his life.’
