Is there a reason for the sharp edges on the bezel?

I know that there are already threads that complain about the sharp edges on the bezel, but none of them seem to ask why we have such sharp edges on the bezel in the first place.

Is it just a design element, or is there a specific reason for the sharpness (i.e. make it easier to rotate the bezels)?
