My embedded SE's dressed at the same level that the customer wore to work - and appropriate for the geography. My China team did not wear the same as my Seattle team for example.

But in our corporate HQ offices I simply asked them to wear the attire appropriate for their aspiration position. If they wanted to be a VP one day, then "look like it" was my advice. It was their career impression to make - not my choice. If you wanted to be caged in the NOC, then wear jeans and don't shave... [casting no aspersions - just that our NOCs were veeerrrryyy casual sometime after 1999...]

I was suit & tie because at any moment I could be in the boardroom. That was then - this is now of course. I'm in sweats right now working this MacBook
