I was reading a story in the NYTimes about making yourself scarce and less available for jobs, negotiation, etc. and I came across this section, which I think applies very well to the current SS Rolex shortage.

... according to Robert Cialdini, a leading expert on influence and the author of “Pre-Suasion: A Revolutionary Way to Influence and Persuade.”

“What the scarcity principle says is that people are more attracted to those options or opportunities that are rare, unique or dwindling in availability,” Dr. Cialdini said. The reason behind this idea has to do with the psychology of “reactance”: Essentially, when we think something is limited to us, we tend to want it more.
