First Time Datejust Buyer - Looking for Info

Hi Folks,

First time Rolex buyer - looking to buy a Datejust circa late 90's.

Looking for the expertise of yourselves - first off, what should I look for when buying a used Datejust - any red flags, obvious things to check, etc?

Secondly - how do I know if the watch has been modified? I'm due to look at several watches next week - each two two tone, jubilee bracelet; I'm erring toward a dial with numerals rather than stick, in either white, black, blue or champagne. Can you tell me if all of these colours are standard with the numerals please - or to get those colours, would the watch have had to have been modified?

Thanks all,
C
