Sounds like hubris on the part of the organisers. I get the feeling the Swatch Group and Seiko won't be the last, but they are two pretty big names in the industry.

There is a WatchPro interview in which the Baselworld managing director said it is very difficult to find the perfect time that can satisfy everyone. He said, "There is the car show in Geneva, there is another show here, then there is Easter, carnival holidays. January would be the best month for the watch industry, but not for jewellery. February would be fine, but that is the Chinese New Year. There is Easter, May Day, Ramadan, the Golden Week. It was a nightmare."

So they chose this time knowing about Golden Week. They are basically telling Seiko that compared to the other factors, the Japanese Golden Week factor is less important.
