Can someone redpill me on the Stainless hyperinflation?

I'm struggling to understand why SS watches (vintage subs in particular) are commanding the prices they are now. When I first visited my local jeweler had had a couple 1680s there and a bunch of other SS models for $4K, $5k etc and they weren't moving so much. Now they are above $10K.

They are gorgeous pieces of course, but I just don't see paying MORE for a stainless 1680 than I would for a YG 18038. One is $1/lb and the other is $1600 an OUNCE!

Is it because they don't wear nearly as fast as gold? That they are more durable and/or a more casual outfit accessory? I apologize as I'm sure this has been asked a lot, but I MUST KNOW!

Sidenote... is it a good time to get a 1803/8? What would be a good price with a pres bracelet?
