Help Me Understand Audemars Piguet

I seriously do not get it.

Particularly their sports models. I've looked at their watches and find them to be visually fine, although not exceptional (the bolted stop-sign bezel is not attractive at all IMO) and I'm sure they run every bit as reliably as most Swiss movements, but I just do not get them at all. When I see a Royal Oak for sale on one of the sites, it will be going for something like $35,000.....used!

Someone please explain.
