We are looking at the cost of the battery as well as re-sealing and waterproofing the watch. Can add up to quite a bit.

I don't know if that's all there is to it, JJ. One other thing to consider is the movement of the second hand.

Even before quartz movements came about, Rolex already tried a "dead beat" (one beat per second) movement in 1954's Tru-Beat, and it was not popular with the Rolex buying crowd. I think the fact that cheap, deadbeat quartz movements (pun intended) behave in the same way was the final nail in the coffin.
