Even before quartz movements came about, Rolex already tried a "dead beat" (one beat per second) movement in 1954's Tru-Beat, and it was not popular with the Rolex buying crowd. I think the fact that cheap, deadbeat quartz movements (pun intended) behave in the same way was the final nail in the coffin.
