How many Red Subs have been made and how many are still alive and in good working order and with all the right parts?

Have been intrigued by the Red Sub for a while and I´m going to meet with a guy to check one out.

Just would like to know how rare it actually is, before I make up my mind...

Is it possible to keep the original dial and hand if you need to service it, if not will Rolex replace it with another red dial?
