I follow the following rules.

1. Never dry wipe the gold (or steel) polished surfaces to remove smudges with a cloth of any kind. Leave it alone until you can properly clean.
2. Always rinse with water and use dawn dish soap and a soft brush or cloth to clean
3. Pat dry with a normal bath towel
