Daytona shares the fewest components with other watches, besides the SkyD/Cellini.

There are two basic movements, the 22xx and 32xx, that make up the vast, vast majority of Rolexes. Some have date, day or 2nd timezone complications, but they're pretty well related to one another. The Daytona, on the other had, is completely its own beast. Case, as well, has no commonality with others.

For a company operating at that scale, this has to be a consideration.
Yes this is what I've heard as well, also heard that they have a tiny team of watchmakers specifically for the Daytona. And to train new watchmakers specifically for the Daytona it takes ages, so scaling up is a long and drawn out process.

I do still believe that Rolex plays on that info as an excuse though, I'm sure the truth is somewhere in the middle.
