Watch Box Battle: Louis Vuitton Coffret 8 Montres vs Goyard Malle Joux 6 Montres

I posted this on another thread but I thought it would be of use for others so Im sharing it here as well, hope its useful to someone.

This will be a review of 2 high end watch boxes to store your precious collection. The 2 watch boxes in question are the Louis Vuitton Coffret 8 Montres and the Goyard Malle Joux 6 Montres. These reviews are hard to come by for cases so I am hoping to help anyone out there with my thoughts.

Price: Goyard 6 watch trunk: JPY 795,300 (715,770) (5100/4600 GBP) *Certain department stores in Japan offer 10% off back on this price
Louis Vuitton 8 watch trunk (Damier): JPY 830,500 (5335 GBP)

The LV trunk comes to roughly 700GBP higher than the Goyard (if you buy from select department stores), but also we need to take into account that it takes 2 more watches than the Goyard. But on the other hand the Goyard comes with leather handles. You will need to decide which matters for you more.

Construction: LV 9/10, Goyard 7.5/10

As you can imagine both trunks are built to the utmost highest quality and standards. Bearing that in mind, I have to give the nod to the LV for the "superlative" quality. When comparing both side by side, I can feel the LV has slightly thicker walls, metal corner reinforcements and the lid feels a touch more secure. This isn't to say the Goyard is a slouch. The Goyard trunk is also built superbly but if Im picking hairs here, the LV is the sturdier one.





Weight: LV 6.5/10, Goyard 8/10

However, the construction has an impact on the weight and this is where you can view the build quality as a potential downside for the LV as the LV is heavier.

2.1KG for the LV and 1.67KG for the Goyard.

Handling: LV 6/10, Goyard 9/10

I think this will be probably the biggest consideration to which one you would go for and certainly was a big factor for me also. The way you intend to use the trunk will most likely decide which one you need. The issue with the LV for me, considering the 2KG + weight and lack of handle is the difficulty in maneuvering the box. IF you intend to keep the box stationary, then the LV is fine as you don't need to move it about. However if you need to transport this trunk somewhere, (to the Bank safe/Watch GTGs etc) then moving the LV Coffret is a massive pita. The Goyard on the other hand is easy to carry, being also much more compact in size as well (as it only holds 6 vs 8). I personally much prefer the Goyard here as 6 is a better balance for me for micro collections as well in the way I intend to use it. For example you can have a box of 6 for Rolex, box of 6 for Patek etc.


Internals:LV 6.5/10, Goyard 8/10

The way the internals are organized is also different. The Goyard as you can see in the photos, have a TRAY on the top as opposed to the LV which has an empty space on the BOTTOM of the watch storage (which in itself is a tray). For me, the Goyard is superior in useability because having a tray at the top is very useful in certain situations like when you're in a bank safe switching out watches, you have a soft tray to place your watches and also in watch GTGs, instead of placing watches on the surface, you now have a tray to place and photograph your watches. The issue with the LV is that the entire watch storage is a tray, which means to get to the BOTTOM empty space, you are now having to LIFT the entire watch tray which in itself presents risks in my opinion as you are balancing 8 watches with your hand. Again, this all only makes sense on how you intend to use the trunk. As I said before, if you just intend to keep the trunk stationary and never move it and also not really use the bottom space too much, the LV is a superb case.





Resale: LV 8/10, Goyard 6.5/10

LV most likely has the much higher brand recognition and thereby resale value as well. As prices and recognition for watches has risen, so has high profile accessories and these LV Coffret sells fairly well on the secondary market. The Goyard is probably still not quite there yet. If this is a consideration, get the LV.

Conclusion (the points are very biased so take with a grain of salt LOL):

LV: 36/50, Goyard: 39/50 (Winner for me)

BOTH superb cases. Abit of a cliche to say this but I doubt anyone would be dissappointed with either one. I personally prefer the Goyard, primarily for the more compact and lighter size, the HANDLE which makes transporting it MUCH easier and one thing I didnt mention, the other cases are much better as well. For example I also have the 2 watch case holder and this one is much better than the equivalent LV one which lacks dividers.




Extra: Pillows

So I have very small wrists, for those that have seen my incomings, you can probably guess my wrist size is closer to a woman's than a mans. Having said that I am pleased to inform that both brands pillows work well. The LV pillow has a more oval shape as opposed to the Goyard one which is more cyclindrical in shape. Because the LV pillow is more oval, it helps retain that shape better in my opinion than the Goyard one which has a longer lug to lug length so to speak. However the Goyard one in this case is constructed in actual suede leather as opposed to the LV which i believe is alcantra style. I don't have a preference for either but the Goyard pillow is certainly nicer to the touch.
