Fun AD story and new watch Saturday!
I was laying in bed this morning fooling around on my iPhone when I got a call from an AD. I bought a Sub from them in 2018. A couple years ago I told the sales person that I was interested in a Datejust 41 Wimbledon dial. She said she would keep her eyes open. The last couple years she texted me with a couple offerings, blue dial and a slate gray dial. But not the Wimbledon. I told her I would be patient and wait.
This morning she called me all excited, saying guess what I have for you? I grabbed a coffee, got dressed, and hit the road. It was an excellent experience all in all. She offered me a beer. I chose a nice IPA. She gave me a cool Rolex book that is no longer in print. We talked watches. She recently purchased a Datejust 36 for herself with a retired Rolex dial. I went and got lunch afterwards. They were playing one of my favorite songs on the radio (He’s Gone by the Grateful Dead) when I ordered a delicious BLT sandwich. When I was at the AD, I overheard the following. One conversation on the phone. Someone calling from out of state looking to get on a waiting list. The sales woman politely told him that they were only dealing with local customers and recommended that he build a relationship with a local AD from his state. She was nice enough and said that she would find one for him. Another gentleman walked in. Looked like he was in his early to mid 60s. A sales person asked him can I help you? He said, yes I would like to buy a watch. OK, what are you looking for? He said, I would like to buy a Rolex GMT Master II. She looked at him puzzled and said, are you familiar with the current state of the Rolex market? He said no and she proceeded to fill him in. I’m not sure if he was playing dumb or not. I mean he literally ordered a GMT like he was ordering a Big Mac. He asked to be put on a waiting list which they declined. But she was nice enough to say that she would take his name. She also said that the watch he was looking for was extremely hard to come by and he could be waiting for years at best, with no guarantee. I’m not sure if he literally got up that morning thinking that he would just walk into a Rolex AD and buy a new GMT. But I guess those were the days. In any event, and unexpected and exciting Saturday! |
